What's the best custom pickup for qotsa sound in lp studio?

hi guys,

i know there are a couple of custom pickup choices, but does someone have the experience which of SD Custom pickups has the best rock n roll/stoner sound in a gibson lp studio?

My style is something like queens of the stone age and wolfmother. I'm after that tone, currently i have the standard studio pickups but since we're almost heading to the studio to record some tracks i want to have the best possible sound. My lp studio goes right into a naylor superdrive 60 amp. Anyone?

I have a similar style and in my Paul's bridge I've found a Custom Custom gets really close, not quite enough bass for my liking but its a thick round sound. I actually prefer the Custom-5 in the brdige, more bass and its tighter but it isn't quite as round or smooth sounding as the CC. A 59 in the neck is a good choice, nice and round/warm. According to the database Josh uses a CC and Troy uses a C5 . . . in at least SOME of their guitars.

My vote is Custom 5

That tone is less about the pickup, and more about the playing style, fuzz, and amp.

That said, something PAF-ish should serve you well. I'd go with one of the Customs.

Yeah, that's what he was asking. :33: :D

I don't know about in a Les Paul, but the Custom 5 in my Epi SG sounds pretty close to what you're after.

According to this website, Josh uses a Custom Custom-b and a 59-n, while Troy uses 59-n, Invader-b, Alnico II Pro-n, and Duncan Custom-b.

I read an interview where Troy said he always uses one of the customs and it almost always ends up coming back to the custom 5 for him. That being said it IS mostly about the amp/effects/settings. AND I think they use the neck p'up for laot of the stuff. In his Kyuss days I think 90% of the time Josh was on the neck pickup which is/was a Dimarzio super 2

I agree with the effects and techniques aspect. I play Pearl Jam stuff with my Dimebucker.

Josh Homme uses Custom Custom...so does Xander Face and he's pretty much the authority on stoner / doom.

As far as i know, Wolfmother use low out-put PAF style pu's in all their guitars !
Nothing hot at all !

Just pure vintage tone into Orange Rocker's & AD's !

Crazy. I have a Super 2 sitting in the closet of my old bedroom at my parents house. It must be from 1981-82 or something. I see that the Super 2 is now a conventional twin bobbin design. The one I have has an encased black plastic shell over the whole pickup, with twelve small diameter hex-key poles.

Any idea which one Homme is/was using?

BTW, the Super 2 is hardly thick sounding from what I remember...given 20+ years.

Here is that old Super 2. I'm going to try it in my LP in the next few weeks or so. I have to lengthen the leads. I never read about the Super 2 being used as a neck p'up, but a hot rounded (with a twist of the tone control) neck sound seems to be what I would get.

I am thinking the compressed "keyboardy" the solo tone @2:50...

I can nail that tone with a CC, try it out.
