Whats the brown sound like?

Re: Whats the brown sound like?

Mids wide open. It is a description of the cranked plexi sound EVH had.

Re: Whats the brown sound like?

Yup, its all about chewing mids with a nice bright top end for bite and defintion while retaining the right amount of low end for to keep it from sounding thin or nasal. A Marshall is a almost a must for the sound (or a good clone/british amp sound). Lots dynamics with a stringy quality, which is why high output pups are not the first choice for that sound.

Re: Whats the brown sound like?

Actually, as far as I know, Ed scooped his mids (not to 0 but a little less then the other two knobs). But it was done because his Plexi had enough mids as it was not because he went for the scooped tone...

Edit:

On most amps I would use more mids for brown sound. Actually I like mids for most guitar sounds. :)

One "version" of the Brown Sound, which in my opinion had many variations up until 1991, when it was no longer Brown (as these ears hear it), sounds like the beginning and end of this clip. The middle 50% isn't bad either, but the more prime examples I feel are at the start and at the end.

Supposedly it's just a guy using a Pearly Gates through a cranked Plexi, but I can't recall exactly.

My favorite versions of the Brown Sound are on Van Halen II, and Women & Children First, which is about as warm & mushy a tone you can have while still spitting out attitude. 1984 is probably my favorite "polished" version of the tone.

well that kicked ****ing ass.

the brown sound is the love child of a paf into a plexi sizzled until the tubes meltedddd!

some of the most serious BROWNAGE is on VH2 and Women and Children First, it got a tad bassier and the detune effect was used abit more in Fair Warning, but only on a few songs

Re: Whats the brown sound like?

Read The most current issue of Guitar World Mag. (the one w/EVH on the cover) In the issue Eddie himself de-bunks any myths of amp mods and how he gets his "Brown" sound. Which (coming from eddie) comes from STOCK, yes Stock Marshall heads with every knob wide open, every thing on 10.

Not much to it.

Re: Whats the brown sound like?

I read Eddie's latest article too where he supposedly debunks many of the myths. Knowing Eddy (not in person, just his printed words), who is to say he isn't BS'ing everyone now?
I think he'll say anything at anytime. Whatever comes into his head. I take EVERYTHING he says with a grain of salt. Then I just stick in a CD and curse the guitar gods for making him sound like that and me sound like poo. LOL!

Re: Whats the brown sound like?

"The" Marshall also had Sylvania 6CA7 output tubes which are more hi-fi sounding and harder than EL34s. They didn't mush out when everything was cranked, I'm definitely in the Marshall camp vs the Mesa camp, but EL34s can get a little mushy when pushed too hard, I run EH 6CA7s in my Trace head and really like them.

Re: Whats the brown sound like?

I'm sorry but that clip off VH playing the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" really ruined the song for me.......except for the solo.

Re: Whats the brown sound like?

I too think the tone on "You Really Got Me" is absolutely horrid. Same for "Eruption". Eddie apparently agrees, as since he "gained power" by the 2nd album, his tone had considerably less treble/brightness added at the mixing board. Something about those 2 tracks is way too bright.

But, who am I to say? Many, many people love the tone on that album.

I personally hate it. Hated it ever since I received it as a Christmas gift in 1989. I remember thinking, "gosh, Eddie sounds horrible. THIS is how Eruption sounds?"

Like I said earlier, VHII, Women & Children First, and 1984 are probably my favorite sounding albums.

As Curt Mitchell once said, "......warm & mushy, yet all at the same time *tight*......."

Eddie never cut you with a knife, let alone a sword.....he always whacked you in the back with a giant brown log, and then dazzled you with edgeless stars.
