What's The Deal With The SH-16

I have to post a new thread because some xxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx got all xxxxxxxx...

Anyhoo - in my best Seinfeld impersonation:

"What... is the deal?" "I have SH-5s... what does the SH-16 do that my SH-5 doesn't?"

Color me inquisitive...

thats not a great way to start off a thread

Re: What's The Deal With The SH-16

Hybrids have more complex mids from the mismatched coils. It is medium output, a lil less than the Custom so it sounds more open when cranked. It also has an A5 instead of ceramic.

Interesting - do you have both pickups?

Re: What's The Deal With The SH-16

It will have two resonance frequencies because of the of the asymmetric coils, which will give it a bit more depth. It is very similar on paper to the concept of a Dimarzio Fred. It would also have quite a bit less output than your sh5

Re: What's The Deal With The SH-16

No, just the Custom and then different hybrids like the Custom/JB. Hybrids have more highs er mids to adjust to, which can be great if that's what you're going for. Such as cut in neck position or raunch in bridge position.

That's Dimarzio's whole selling point for that process. The custom/JB seems like it would sound a lot like a Norton.

Re: What's The Deal With The SH-16

I was concerned it would be thin in the mids due to the '59 coil... but it's not from what I hear in that last demo.

Hmm... yes... fascinating.:scratchch

No, if anything the 59 coil is just going to give it a more complex top end. It will also be fairly richer in harmonics than a standard bucker.

Re: What's The Deal With The SH-16

Something is responsible for adding the midrange that the SH-14 so obviously lacks. It's not as simple as this, of course, but contrasting the Custom 5 with the 59/Custom Hybrid can go a long way in understanding what makes the SH-16, and really any other good hybrid worthwhile.

While I may just be a xxxxxxx xxxxxxx for not tolerating impolite and intellectually lazy threadjacking, I think this discussion is well worth its own topic.

Re: What's The Deal With The SH-16

So, who has both pickups? Better yet, comparison clips?

Would I be wrong in assuming the output would be roughly the same as a hot PAF wound to 9+K?

This could be a good in-betweener (PAF - SH-5).

Re: What's The Deal With The SH-16

The SH-16 is the perfect solution to the ones that finds the Custom a bit too much and the '59b a bit too little.

IME, the best inherent feature is its ability to sound great with almost any alnico mag and sound from good to decent with ANY mag, meaning it'll never sound bad, not even on purpose. Something that very few p'ups on the market could say for themselves.

Even though it's been marketed to the modern Metal crowd, where this p'up really shines is with the early-breakup, blues and classic rock crow, added the modern jazz, jazz-rock and fusion crowd as well, making it a truly "universal" p'up, something you just can't go wrong with.

I've made and installed literally dozens of this p'up in the most varied types of guitars, and not even once failed to deliver what expected, with a little bit of mag fine-tuning.

HTH,

Similar, yes. Only slightly lower than the sh14
