I love harmonics!

And i get some pretty good harmonics out of my ENGL with a bit of gain, and i of course get heaps out of my POD down low...those things sound awesome down low!

What are some others that are great for pinch harmonics and the like?

Re: Whats the most harmonically rich amp you've ever played?

As stupid as it sounds... a Marshall Original Guv'nor... through a set of studio monitors.

Re: Whats the most harmonically rich amp you've ever played?

My original 59 Bassman is pretty darned harmonically rich!

So are my 58, 59 and 62 Fender Deluxes with Celestion Silver Bulldog 12's.

And so are my 51 Fender Super and my buddy's 53 Super, each with two 10's: original Jenson P10R's and C10N speakers.

A great Vox AC30 is pretty rich too...pretty loud too!

Harmonically rich, and an amp that can give up pinch harmonics are two different things. Harmonically rich would be a tube amp with a giant transformer, and a very simple point to point circuit, devoid of features that rob frequencies from the signal path. You hear so much of the audio spectum that the amp sounds twice as big as
an amp with the opposite features. These amps sound huge, but may not yield easy
pinch harmonics, because they may not have enough gain.

An amp, that gives up the pinch harmonics easy, is any amp with a tight and focused gain, allowing artificial harmonics to jump off the neck. This can be anything from a
POD to a superhighgain amp. These amps still wouldn't qualify as harmonically rich,
just highly overdriven.

Just had to clarify that. As far as harmonically rich, I'd say the Matchless, Badcats,
vintage P to P Marshalls and Fenders qualify. As for pinch harmonics - any high gain preamp, whether digital, SS, or tube, will do that.

Bogner Metropolis
'59 Bassman
'59 Tweed Deluxe
SLO100 (for modern high-gain tones)

Geerjonser is correct. What I consider to be a good tone is what you would call 'harmonically rich'; the technique of being able to perform pinched or artificial harmonics (including tapped) is a matter of gain + good technique.

There are many harmonically rich amps out there, most of them being hand-made boutique amps. The one I fell in love with is the Rivera Knucklehead, which is also about the loudest head in the world ..

Re: Whats the most harmonically rich amp you've ever played?

Harmonically rich, by GJ's definition... an original PTP early '70 Hiwatt DR504 or DR103 ;)

Re: Whats the most harmonically rich amp you've ever played?

High gain AND harmonically rich. Now, that's a sound that rattles your pant legs!

That pretty much describes this MAZ 38-Senior I have. Huge tranny, ptp wiring and no extra tone-sucking circuits to get in the way of great tone. With a quad of EL84s, it has a nice mid/upper-mid voice. Pretty "harmonically-rich" to my ears. Nice match for low/medium output single coil and PAF-type pups. It loves P90s.

Re: Whats the most harmonically rich amp you've ever played?

Thanks gearjoneser i wasnt actually aware there was a distinction. I love learning new things like that on this forum :D

Re: Whats the most harmonically rich amp you've ever played?

gee. I know this is an old thread but I couldn't resist hijacking it:

How do you define a large transformer? How large is large?

I was about to type something sim to what TO and GJ said...

And I find PUPS make up a huge part of the equation. Not neccessarily in output ..not sure what the factor there is...as an example...my Epi w/ cheapo 57 classics (not real ones, the Epi copy) gives up AH's pretty easily...and it's a very low output HB. Yet the 498T in my firebird is tougher to get them out of even thought it's a damn hot pup.

As for amps...harmonically rich/complex? There are lots...VHT comes to mind first...my Chubster, MESA Stilletto, Splawn, Voodoo, Fargen...tons...but those are off the top of my head.
