What's the most popular LP pup combo?

This question has probably been asked a ka-zillion times before, but until you're in the position of actually making some changes, the answers are 100X more important to you.

So obviously I have a LP & am currently sitting on the fence as to whether I should swap the stock pups (490R neck, 498T bridge) for some Duncans. I find the bridge a bit thin & the neck a bit muddy, both are a little weak compared to what I'm used to) I'll know after my gig this weekend for sure if I want to make a change.

It's a LP Studio, Arctic White with gold pup covers. (I definitely will get the Duncans with gold covers also) I play ACDC to ZZ Top & everything inbetween.

So what is the most popular LP pup combo, or even better, what is yours & why?

Thanks. This will give me a direction to go in. - Rob

Get a set of 59's. hard to go wrong there.

A CC and an Alnico II pro.

Can't answer your question, but love that avatar. ;)

Re: What's the most popular LP pup combo?

I use Tom Holmes humbuckers in mine. But if I didn't have them I'd go for a set of Antiquitys, 59's, or Seth Lovers or some combination of those.

However, seems like I sell more Jazz/JB and 59N/JB sets for Les Pauls than any other set.

Alot of Alnico2Pro, Pearly Gates and 59N/59B sets too.

Followed by 59N/C5 and 59N/Custom.

Not that many 59N/Custom Custom sets...or 59N/Screamin Demon sets.

The 59N/Screamin Demon set is a real sleeper, IMO...it's a great set for rock and blues.

Perhaps a Pearly Gates set wouldn't go astray.

What other pickups in other guitars do you have? Don't want to repeat combinations, right?

I have a Set of Seths in my Gibby LP Standard and a Screamin Demon/Pearly Gates set in my Gordon Smith Graduate60 (Les Paul). Both sets are great for classic rock and blues tones. The Seths (imo) NAIL the old PAF sound, while the Demon/PG setup has a little more 'sizzle' to it, with a little more brightness (especially the Demon).

Re: What's the most popular LP pup combo?

First replacement pickup I bought was a DiMarzio Super Dist, and I hated that in my black standard. I ended switching out the Dirty Fingers (BLECH) for a Dunacan Custom in my Explorer and fell in love with it, and put the same in the black standard as was like "WHOAH"

After that I always put a standard custom in the bridge of my other pauls and explorers. Sometimes kept the stock gibson neck, sometimes put in a 59 which helped clear some but not all of the muddiness of the gibson pickup.

I really, really liked that combo for the music I play. Custom was chunky/growly yet cut through sufficiently for leads without being screechy.

I've played some Les Pauls with other pickups too, and I liked the JB & PG in the bridge & Jazz in the neck. Duncan distortion was pretty decent too.

But if you are looking for "classic" Les Paul tones, then a pair of 59's are hard to beat.

Re: What's the most popular LP pup combo?

Lots of choice there, lots of great combo of LPs. You have to try 'em!

- '59/'59
- Seth Lover set
- JB/Jazz (seymour's favorite!)
- Pearly Gates set

My fav is the Seth Lover. PERIOD. :smokin:

Re: What's the most popular LP pup combo?

Thanks for all the info.

If I do decide to change, I'm going for the JB/Alnico II Pro

Re: What's the most popular LP pup combo?

Pearly Gates set romps in a Paul. I have it in mine and it does everything from jazzy cleans to ZZ Top (of course) to heavier sounds like STP, Alice in Chains, and Foo Fighters.

Re: What's the most popular LP pup combo?

I like the C-5/59 and CC/Seth The first is best for all tones, and the latter is a bit warmer. Overall, my main paul is C-5/59, as well as several other guitars like my LP Custom and McCarty.
