What's the smallest shred guitar neck?

I've started to do a little bit more shredding and thinking bout a double cutaway with a floyd type guitar - but on the downside I have pretty small hands. Most shred style guitars are quite wide and flat (ie. Ibanez's) - I have a Wolfgang whose neck I love but are there any guitars similar that I should look at?

That was my suggestion too- I have the same problem, and the EBMM necks are really the best there is.

Dude...I think you're more than ok on the guitar department...

Kramer Nightswan.

It's got an R1 nut. Smallest neck I've put my hands on.

If ya can find one :)

I also have diddy hands but I don't mind wide fretboards as longs as the neck is thin (ie Ibanez/Charvel).

Not to hijack, but I really tried to get into this guitar. I like the color and the design. What I don't get is the HH pickup config with humbuckers in the bridge and middle positions with no neck humbucker. I just don't get that....

Haha, I should update, I actually do have a couple good amps as well. Sadly my bigger tube amps are in another country...

However, you can't have too many guitars. I'm trying to see if there's a limit :naughty:

Dude, you don't get a shredding liscence until you can do this:

!!

The most stupid-thin shredder necks I have played are a Hamer Steve Stevens model that a local shop had in the 80's, a Kramer Nightswan (I like the middle position humbucker), some of the Axtra guitars that a local shop used to carry, Robin shredder guitars like their Medley model, and some of the 80's Ibanez models. Hamer is kind of out of the shred guitar biz now. Ibanez still makes some models very similar to ones they made in the 80's so you might have the best luck finding an Ibanez with a really skinny neck. If you have the budget, Robin will still build you a custom dream shredder with pickups, exotic tone woods and features to your specs. I tried finding Axtra's site but it didn't come up. There's
Axtra guitars contact info
on Seymour Duncan's site though.

Haha, I remember having the hair but not the chops...

If I compare it against the Wolfy, its not just the thickness of the neck that I'm looking at (the Wolfy isn't exactly a Wizard neck) but more the shape in the palm and width of the board. For example, I really like the 68 Strat neck cause it starts out at 40mm...

There's a perpetual limit ... it called you 'need just one more' tell yourself that after you get each instument and you'll be alright.

Couldn't you just get a new neck for the Wolfie?
Not sure if the neck screw pattern is the same as the Strat, but if it is, you could simply get a replacement more to your liking from someone like Warmoth.
Cheaper than a whole new guitar, plus, it's undoable.

Thing is I quite like the neck of the Wolfy - just that my current axe is a stoptail, so no floyd. Thing is, I could get another Wolfy, but seeing if there's anything else out there in terms of neck thats similar with a floyd out there first.

Have you played a Carvin?
I've got an old 1988 DC 135 that I sanded the back of the neck on, and its like butta.
No sure about the current neck profiles, but I've always felt that they were pretty slim/fast from the used ones I've picked up here and there.

IIRC, the only model they make that isn't 25" scale is their C-66, which 25.5", so you could start there.

For some reason I've always lusted after the DC-125 with the old Jackson-style reverse headstock with an OFR and a single knob.

I'd still look at maybe a Warmoth body with the carved heel and a Warmoth/USACG neck... gun stock oil wood back, ebony fretboard, 25.5", 1 5/8" nut, 22/24 extra jumbo stainless steel frets and as flat a radius as you can stand... at least 14".
Shred city.

Re: What's the smallest shred guitar neck?

Well you're talking about width so you need a 1.65 or even a 1.625 nut width. The Brian Moore C90p model I used to have had a very small neck. I thought I was going to break the thing off which is why I sold it. It could handle shred/fusion/cleans whatever. Very versatile setup on that guitar.

It's probably because it's got a 24 3/4 scale and 24 frets - it has to have an extended fretboard. I'm just guessing a neck HB won't be positioned correctly. Some owners route a SC or SC-size HB for the neck position. Me, I try to leave it as is, and just pretend it's just got 1 bridge HB :)

The neck of that guitar is not the thinnest (a wizard neck is thinner), but it's got the narrowest neck.

Well...I can come up with one fat Swede who shreds on Strats, and it seems like you have a couple!

On the first question though...I remember playing a custom electric about a month ago that measured about 17-18mm, which is about 1 or 2 mm skinnier than a Wizard, but it was just as wide.

Gotcha, thanks for the explanation....
