Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

JCM800 (Old School through Thrash Metal)
Mesa Dual Rectifier (New and Nu Metal)
(Death/Grind/Et Al) I have no idea.

Those are the Archetypes, now everyone and their brother makes a version of those that is probably better than the original.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

mesa dual rectifier sounds cool

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

After you go through all the regularly priced ones, and get to the top of the heap, you end at the Bogner Ecstasy, Diezel Herbert, and Diezel VH4S. That's the end of the road when it comes to rock/metal amps.

I agree. I know I'll never get to that category either. lol

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

The trick is finding a used one, and selling two of your average amps to fund it.
I forgot to mention the Bogner Uberschall. You can find one of those for $2000, and it's a brutal sounding amp, although it's not as versatile as the other 3.

Even if those prices are out of reach, there's plenty of rock amps out there, that sound great by themselves, and even better with a pedal or two. I've always loved nice sounding amps, and if you buy used, they're even more affordable.

In a day and age when there's millions of guitar amps on the market it's crazy to pay new prices. You have to be patient with cash in hand though.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

And don't forget about Soldano Avenger, SLO, 50/100+, Decatone, VHT, Rivera, Peavey, Mesa Stiletto II, Rectifier, Krank Revolution, ENGL, Laney, and all the newer Marshalls. Any one of those amps and a good OD pedal, if you even need one.
All good choices.

As much as I see the necessity of 2-12 cabs, I still think a matching 4-12 cabinet is usually the best tone you'll get from a channel switching head.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

Framus Dragon/Cobra, VHT Deliverance, any Krank, Laney VH100R are what I have experienced. The deliverance was the most brutal and unique sounding but is only one channel. I currently use the Laney because it can do anything you want.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

Engl!!!
Powerball, Fireball, SE, Invader, Blackmore(for more oldschool thrash sounds), Savage.
All those amps have some of the finest Metal tones available but the interesting thing is that Engl managed to cmobine all this metalness with great other channels that makes all of them versetaille and tonefull for a lot of genres. That's why Engls slay most other metal amps imo

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

Yep, please lets not forget Laney after all, Supergroup pretty much defined what metal tone is in the begining of metal as itself. Definately JCM800/Jubilee as a lot of mile-stone albums were done with those, but lets not forget the LANEY AOR amps - early Ratt and maybe not the most selling band but one of the most definitive metal bands - Savatage, Gutter Ballet and Streets were recorded on Laney AOR pro-tubes. As well as Sabbath's Zero the Hero. AOR's were everything that JCM800's were after all the different mods that were floating around back then. You cant ignore Mesa's Rectumfires with other pre-amps/poweramps, Master of Puppets anyone? But today, I am sorry, its Laney again, VH100/TI100, don't believe me? Check out "new" Heaven and Hell? if it aint metal to you - you don't know metal. As far as Bogner ... well I just think its a little too young to be in that category but clearly it is the best candidate.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

Ooops, I did forget Engl, I would give them ahead of Bogner because of album credibility.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

I tried an uberschall for the first time this week. That thing is absolutely insane. I can't imagine a better modern metal amp. Makes a recto sound like a modeling amp.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

I second VHT. A lot of brutal records have been made using those amps...

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

Genz Benz El Diablo wiull get you there.

And don't forget the Peavey XXX.

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

Cornford mk50 II.Best boutique amp for it's price!
Engl Pover ball and Fireball are insane.Perfect sounding out of the box!I couldn't dial and bad tone with the Fireball ,and i can't say it for any Marshall or Recto!
Bogner Ubershall has an insane tone! Not for everone ,and the lead tone is sooo vocal.I know how you play ,so i would say buy a Powerball or Ubershall! You won't regret that!
BTW ,Diezel Herbert ,VH4 and Einstein are all super great amps ,tight and loud. But they are hard to find 2. hand also!

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

Oh and if you think you need just one or 2 tones ,check the new Marshall Kerry King! And tell me how it sounds :D.It have to be killer!

Re: what's the ultimate heavy metal amplifier?

How about the Bogner ubershall?

It's nice, but it's alot of $$$ for such a limited amp.

The thing about high gain heads is that tonally they are all largely the same in one way or another (American high gain vs British high gain), the main difference is in how they react to your pick attack and how quickly they track your playing.

On one end you have the Mesa Rectifier, which has a saggy attack and a loose tracking that gives it that huge riffing sound it's known for.... and on the other you have the VHT Super Lead and most ENGL heads that are known for being extremely tight, giving that quick, clear high gain tone that's so loved by shredders.

And in the middle you have pretty much everything else. The trick isn't so much to find the 'ultimate' heavy metal amplifier, the trick is to find the one with the right attack and sustain characteristics for your style and taste.

After all, given the choice I probably wouldn't shred on a Dual Rectifier.... nor would I play slow, doomy riffs on an ENGL.
