Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

I compared the soldano SLO100 next to a VHT and the Soldano killed it in crunchy 80's classic metal. However, the VHT excelled at the newer, heavier types of melodic extreme metal.

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

I rather like VHT amps. They have Marshall Mojo aND THEN SOMETHING NEW.

I wanted an Avenger, but it's too one dimensional for me. I would buy one cheap.

I have debated on getting a Dual Rectifier for 2 years now. They sound big in loud situations, and they work great. Tonally, I never get that sexy, sweet mojo I want. When I crank my Shiva and back off the gain a bit, it's almost like I get these moments where notes bloom like a Plexi. My Framus can even get some of that cranked. The Dual Recs never did that for me.

The only amps that felt that way were the Diezel (too much for me $$$), Avenger (I want channels), and VHT.

THIS thread is important to me. I am trying to decide on what my "heavy" amp will be. I am not completely sold on the Framus Dragon asmy heavy sound. I love the Shiva. If I sold both I could get a used Ecstasy, but the clean on the Shiva KILLS for Jazz, R&B, blues etc etc etc

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

Ever had a 5150? Killer metal amp.

That or a Dual Recto is what I'd go for. You probably won't find that bloom out of a hi-gain amp, it's the natureof the beast.

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

I heard a guy nail and I mean dead on the head nail Metallica and Green Day tones using a Godin into a Pod 2.0, into a Fender Twin Reverb set on 5. It was so loud, you could barely stay in the same room. And this was a large tavern about 40 ft by 60 ft.
So I guess the ultimate metal setup depends on if you want to look the part, or just sound the part.

Re: Whats The Ultimate Metal Amp?

So how does the 6505 compare to the 5150?

*edit: reading other threads answered my question. Carry on.

No difference, whatsoever.
I would have to disagree there. I believe the design on the 6505 causes a starange magnetic field that makes the tone sound warmer and more tubey with sort of an enhanced tone definitely making it the superior amp....

...i kid!!

in my limited experience, the 5150.

Yeah, for a straight up, mega-gain-metal-and-nothing else amp, what I'd go with (maybe not the greatest tone, but "most metal" IMO), although I haven't tried any of the Bogners discussed. I have tried the Diezel VH4 and it's high gain channel sounded, I'm not kidding, almost identical to the solo channel of the Crate GT1200 I used to play out of. Compression up the wah, dark in character, no thanks. In fairness, the other channels on that amp were fantastic (the Diezel, that is).

Surprised nobody's mentioned Randall, a ton of metal players use their SS/hybrid stuff. The absence of Krank does not suprise me, although it would on any other board.

Depends what kind of metal really. I play some heavy stuff, and as far as i'm concerned, the Sunn Model T is the heaviest amp.
