expensive, overly pretty, and pretty generic, and they always make me think of crappy nu metal and post grunge bands. they do not serve my purpose. they generally play quite nice, though.

What's the benefit to such a big neck heel that takes precedence over high fret accessability?

You can't play easily above the 12th fret on a single cutaway Gibson Les Paul either - but it sounds so good that a Les Paul is all some guys will play.

Maybe the big neck heel PRS uses gives the guitar a less flexable neck and a tone and sustain that sounds more like the stiffer/shorter neck of a single cutaway guitar.

I'm not talking about a shorter scale - I'm talking about the benefits tonewise of a neck that's shorter, stiffer and more solid.

Single cutaway Les Paul Juniors sound better (to me) than double cutaway Les Paul Juniors and I think it's for that reason. I hear a thicker, deeper tone with more lower mids if the neck isn't flapping in the breeze.

Personally, I think the single cutaway PRS sounds better than the double cutaway versions....for the same reason.

There is one USA PRS model that I would purchase today if I had the money to throw at it..... the SC 58. That is one sexy looking guitar and I bet it plays like a dream based on the specs. It has nothing to do with it's vintage inspired whatever either. I would also pick this model off the rack if Paul offered any model for free in Gearjoneser's scenario.

Give me the same with a double cut and I fall out of my socks ^^

The heel on the 22 and 24 isn't that big on the 24 and CE 24 it gives you more access than a 24 fret Strat or a Jackson Dinky. It is there to make the neck sound bigger and also because it adds strength. The heel on the McCarty is to try and make it sound and feel more like a Les Paul. In fact the whole bigger heel thing comes from Ted as much as from Paul. Personally I don't mind the heel although I mostly play telecaster style guitars. The Heel on the PRS SC is smaller and offers more access than on a Les Paul. Although it does look as if the heel is getting an overhaul with the new neck design that he is launching.
The other way to add mass and stiffness to a neck which lets you get away with a small heel is to use a multi piece neck but guitar players always baulk at this so it's mostly used on basses.

I read this whole thread......

Re: What's with the Love or Hate thing in regards to PRS Guitars?.....

Quoted for Truth . . .

It always cracks me up that some people actively hate certain brands so much. I mean, I can understand not liking the way that a guitar sounds, or feeling that they don't play well, even disliking the cost of a guitar . . . but to just hate on something for the name is ridiculous. I think that telecasters are ugly guitars . . . but do I hate them? Would I turn down a free one? Of course not . . . I'd play the crap out of it because it's a free guitar.

That's pretty extreme, don't you think? Eliminate the haters by giving them all a free guitar? Doesn't sound like a very solid business model. The fact that I'd take one if it were free doesn't say very much. I'd take just about any guitar if it were being given away.

I really like some of the PRS designs. That amber flame double-cut that Astrozombie posted? That's my idea of a pretty swingin' PRS. I'd rock it. But I like the Gibson double-cuts, too. So maybe one of each. The Gibson in flamed rootbeer, FTMFW.

Reality is, I haven't tried a PRS yet because I haven't run out of guitars that I want more. Give me time; I'm still young.

Re: What's with the Love or Hate thing in regards to PRS Guitars?.....

I get the distinct feeling that some of the people in this thread who are coming out strongly against PRS guitars have never spent any real time playing one.

They don't work for me, but at least I know that because I've owned a few!

That is SO not what he said.

Re: What's with the Love or Hate thing in regards to PRS Guitars?.....

I have a Custom 24, while I can say it is a fine guitar (and I don't even mind the stock pups) it is not one of my go-to guitars.

I think they are priced about right and rank up there with Hamer in the quality and craftsmanship. I don't love them or hate them, they just don't fit me well. The control layout and more traditional feel just aren't my comfort zone.

Re: What's with the Love or Hate thing in regards to PRS Guitars?.....

my PRS story : lusted over them for 20 years but from far afar as i could not justify the $$ ... finally got the scratch together (thanks, signing bonus!) ... bought one i fell in love with thru looks only ... stunningly gorgeous guitar ... just didnt bond with it ... sold it ... but didnt give up my love of the guitars and company ... had a chance at a great value SC245 - its now my #1 ... got a chance at a great value ted DC 245 soapy .. its my #3 now (#2 is an EJ strat) ... i play each of these 1 set when i gig now so they are essentially tied for #1 ... i only rank them that way because i would grab the SC245 if i could only play one - and if i was the only guitarist in the band, the sopay would probably be #1 ... what i think i found is that the 25" scale didnt do it for me ... the only other PRS i lust for is the 305 which has a 25.5 scale (like the strat) ... i'l give the new dc3 a chance but it is 25.25 scale so who knows how it will feel

to me, there is no single PRS sound or 'typical' artist

find the one that suits ya - PRS or otherwise

Re: What's with the Love or Hate thing in regards to PRS Guitars?.....

Me, too.

I'm willing to give it another try, though. I think a CE model with maple neck and trem might be more to my liking than the stoptail McMarthy.

I have a CE24 and love it. It's a 20th Anniversary solid Mahogany with a Blazing Copper finish. I have a friend with a Custom 24 and I prefer mine. There are so many new models out now. I think the point is not lost on Paul that there are guys out there that want the more vintage Fender & Gibson vibe so that's what he's done this year.

Re: What's with the Love or Hate thing in regards to PRS Guitars?.....

I've played a few. Beautiful guitars and wonderful craftsmanship. Playability was always good but never great. They always seem more like pieces of art than music tools. My Music Man Petrucci is a whole different story though...

(disclaimer: all my guitars get well used so I automatically don't go for "pretty" when buying a guitar)

Re: What's with the Love or Hate thing in regards to PRS Guitars?.....

That is SO not what he said.

Sometimes, I think the love/hate thing boils down to 'have owned/have not owned' factor. Most who have owned a PRS never hate them, whether they love them or not. The only hate comes from those who've never owned one, and may or may not have even picked one up.

I'll bet the opinions would change for everyone if someone handed them a free PRS that fit their requirements to a T. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't hear anything but glowing reviews then.

It was what he said; I should have quoted the original GJ with it for clarity.

Re: What's with the Love or Hate thing in regards to PRS Guitars?.....

-Santana uses them. He has great tone.
I've always loved that Carlos Santana tone from the early albums with "Santana" (the band) when he played an SG. It was almost as if the notes would just naturally sing off the fretboard, effortlessly.

I just don't hear that same tone since he signed his big PRS endorsement deal. His tone on the latest couple of Carlos albums has just sounded awful, IMO.

You can't play easily above the 12th fret on a single cutaway Gibson Les Paul either ...
You should try a Les Paul Axcess, it might change your opinions about the dusty frets on a Les Paul.

Re: What's with the Love or Hate thing in regards to PRS Guitars?.....

They have a different scale length and different neck shape which you either love or you hate.

Well, hate is a strong word, but the guitars just don't feel right in my hands. Nothing wrong with their tone or worksmanship if it's your thing.

Re: What's with the Love or Hate thing in regards to PRS Guitars?.....

For those who know me, this may seem odd but I find the new ones overpriced. They might be in the same ballpark as a comparable Gibson but that kind of reinforces in my mind that their pricing is off. :p

Your interpretation is very different from mine. I believe GJ's hypothetical was not "buy off the haters with a free guitar" but rather to exemplify "The haters would rave about how nice they were if they weren't so caught up in how much a PRS cost".
