The online community oftentimes seems to be skewed towards tube love, but I've met many people in person who didn't care for tubes because they can be noisy, are expensive to re-tube and re-bias, finicky, have to be careful transporting, etc.

There are several types of distortion (not to be confused with overdrive) so the only way getting something else that does distortion is a waste of money is if you only use one distorted tone for all of your stuff. My Hot Rod Deluxe's drive channel was modded similar to a Mesa Boogie and I love it, but I still use overdrive and distortion pedals.

But two weeks ago I pulled my Carvin Belair out of the closet
And it does have a different feel to it
Much more bloom. Responds more to playing dynamic
Likes the Joyo Ultimate Drive better than the Laney

If you've not logged many hours on stage, I could see why you might not have a preference for tubes over SS/modelers. My Roland Cube 80XL is a great amp and I really like it for home practice, as well as band practice. But when you're playing live with a band and wanting your playing to cut through, that's where tube amps really shine. I spent years gigging with SS preamps and SS power amps, as well as with a Yamaha DG80 modeling combo and Line 6 Duoverb head. They were great rigs, but didn't even come close to having the clean headroom of my tube rigs, or to being able to be heard as clearly in the band mix as my tube amps. I'm currently playing through Friedman Smallbox and Splawn Quickrod rigs. I've had, gigged, and recorded dozens and dozens of tube, SS, and digital modeling rigs over the past 32+ years. I can't think of any non-tube amps that truly held a candle to most of the tube rigs that I've owned over the years. It's just not the same.

All tube amps are not created equally, there's lot of mediocre ones out there. Manufacturers take a lot of short cuts. A cheap tube amp isn't necessarily something to get excited about.

Typically solid state sounds un-tube-like and the distortion is not so musical. That being said, you must listen to a Quilter amp which sounds very tube-like. I have a hard time considering the price of a Quilter which is also very tube-like.

I like tube, I like ss. Tubes tend to have more mids, especially distorted. Ss can have a pristine clean sound which can be turned into the most brutal gain with the right pedal, as Dominus said.

Some of my favorite "tube" sounds come from solid-state pedals into whatever amp is sitting around.

I remember loving the JC-120. I think I saw Schafer of Iced Earth using one when they played in Tempe a few years back.

No hate here!

I've got a Randall T2HL tube/SS hybrid & an AMT Stonehead (50 watt SS) & I actually bought an Orange CR120 head in December...still waiting for my NAD 3 months later though (Out of stock/waiting for restocks ..only one importer in country :rolleyes:)

Personally my experience with SS stuff is awesome..like someone said, they're great for cleans and 80's-right-upto-insane distortion...but frankly the sweet middle/edge of break-up tones are there too if you take a little extra time/trouble dialing them in. I find the tonestack to generally be a lot more sensitive with SS stuff..

i generally consider anything that amplifies a signal an amp an considering (to my knowledge) they don't make an iTube to run the iRig through so solid state is your vote then lol. on a different note i have tried the pc only thing but i just cant stand it. i need to fill the room with noise an pc speakers dont do it right

Then you are using the wrong pc speakers ;)

Try a great set of studio speakers and you can get blown away. Also, I've used a lower priced Creative Set like this one and sounds phenomenal.

This topic is so fun, I wrote a blog about it. In the end, use what you have, and later, when you can get anything you want, use what sounds good to you.

I use this as my amp and I love it. Ive tried other modellers but I still go back to GR4..

for speakers I used to use a 5.1 stereo with 3 small speakers, a sub and 2 early 90's pioneer towers.. gotta love them 12's:)..I have sence phased out the stereo for a grado sr80 headphones that I use most of the time or a iLive soundbar.. Sounds really nice even though it probably wouldnt hurt to get a sub for it

...well to be fair i was using rocksmith 2014... not exactly made for that kinda use... lol i still just prefer knobs to buttons so amps it is.
