What's Your Favorite Cheap Solid State Half Stack?

Re: What's Your Favorite Cheap Solid State Half Stack?

well, new stuff- a Marshall MG100 *WITH A GOOD SET OF SPEAKERS* (i.e. not the MG 4x12) is NOT a bad sounding rig for SS.

tell me this doesn't sound good

Old Peaveys, 80s Randalls, 80s Marshalls all sound pretty decent.

the fender fm head and 4x12 wasnt bad for $600, beat the mg100 in my books

Re: What's Your Favorite Cheap Solid State Half Stack?

20 yrs ago, I had an old Standell SS from the late 60s/early 70s, 100 watts, reverb. I played it through a variety of cabs, including a 4x12.

It had a decent clean sound on its own, and I had a Rat and a Tube Screamer laying about, so I tried them for OD. I'm not usually a big fan of Rats, but it actually worked pretty well for a basic hard rock sound! Strat w/SD Invader-Rat-SS Standel.

Now, I'm not pretending that it could sound as good as a decent tube amp, but it was quite sufficient for a drunken jam session if nothing else was about!

Not especially cheap and not actually a half stack (who cares about the look? ;)) but a Tech 21 Trademark 60 plus Power Engine 60 gives you 120w in two 1x12 cabs. Active EQ so you can get a bigger bottom end than you might think, and if you place the two cabs a way apart it's a full sound with plenty of coverage.
