I'd say that warm colors look best on an axe. In this order:

Red
Orange
Yellow

Of course variations and bursts are great too.

BTW, in general, my favorite color is blue.

I like dark red, blue green, and off white finishes.

I don't really care for orangish finishes or brighter green finishes.
