What's your favorite distortion?

I'm thinking about eventually looking into distortion pedals, maybe even buying one, in order to add a little bit of variety to my dirt sounds. Right now all I'm really asking is what kind of pedals you all like (that would be useful for hard/heavy rock, into metal).

Thanks

There's my modded RAT... and then there's this

Re: What's your favorite distortion?

best ones I've used...

Line 6 Uber Metal
Boss Metal Core
Behringer pedals are actually pretty good nowadays (believe it or not lol!)
digitech death metal.

I heard the Egnator Black metal pedal is supposed to be awesome too!

Re: What's your favorite distortion?

Deliberately choosing distortions as opposed to overdrives:

Mesa/Boogie V-Twin - Covers everything from Santana to Metallica and sounds glorious doing it.

Seymour Duncan Power Grid - Huge amounts of gain in the hot-rodded Marshall genre. Nice EQ section.

ProCo Rat 2 - I always want to spell that with a second "t", for some reason. This pedal transports me.

Re: What's your favorite distortion?

I used to have 4 or 5 dirt pedals that i used every time i played. The Black Arts Toneworks Coven replaced all of them.

What all kinds of flavors do you get out of it?

Re: What's your favorite distortion?

Usually use it on the amp but I have a Wampler Triple Wreck that I use for backup in case my amp goes down or I'm using shared amps. Can do crunchy blues to full gain metal!

The overdrive side can do cleanish Tubescreamery boost through heavy distortion. The fuzz side is an improved Muff. Both sides clean up well with the guitar's volume knobs. Both sides on at once sounds like the apocalypse. I just bought a second one.

Ooh... You are a bad man. I've been eyeing the Coven for a year or so. The Black Forest side was always up in the air for me though.

Do you ever use single coils with it (other than P90s)?

Also, do you use anything else with it or can you do Guitar -> Coven -> Amp and be pretty happy?

For cascading?

Re: What's your favorite distortion?

It sounds great with my Tele, Strat and Jazzmaster. Obviously I have to dial it in a little differently than if i was using one of my Gibsons. My chain is a tuner, a Crybaby, a Coven, a Stone Deaf PDF-1 after it for an extra solo boost / low low gain overdrive, and a Carbon Copy.

My second one is the super rare green forest one that should have been my first one... it's going to live with my green Matamp until i die.

For metal..

Hard rock & stuff..

Pretty sure there's a ton of others I love ..but those two came to mind first.

Re: What's your favorite distortion?

Have had a Trutone Jekyll and Hyde V3 for a few weeks now and really like it.

Great improvement over the V1 and V2. The OD side has a flat mids and adjustable bass. It also has a mix pot so you can go from pure boost to solid OD.
The Distortion side has a more modern and a conventional voice. The dist side will drop down into the OD range of grit to full on distortion.

Also, this pedal allows you to use each side independently, OD into Distortion, or Distortion into OD. I found this a very versatile and fun to play pedal.

Re: What's your favorite distortion?

For amps that have pretty good gain already, I have really grown to love my OCD pedal. For amps that I run into the clean channel, I like my AMT D2 using the drive out jack in front of the clean channel.

There are sure a crazy amount of good distortion makers these days though.

Re: What's your favorite distortion?

I've always liked my MXR Distortion III.

I think if I was buying a pure distortion box right now I'd start with a Rat.

Re: What's your favorite distortion?

For dry and nasty, Keeley modded MT-2. For something a bit warmer, SD TT-Mayhem.

I don't always use distortion pedals but when I do, I use Dos Equis... I mean Homebrew full metal jacket. It sounds like early 80s metal cranked marshalls
