Plate is great as a tone-shaping tool because it doesn't impart a "dimension" to the sound. You can use it and also add some room/ambience afterwards to mesh the guitar with the other instruments of the mix.

+1 for plate.

I love "plate". But I'm referring to a digital emulation of it. I don't have a big sheet of steel hanging in my music room. It seems to be the cleanest of the reverb algorithms. On the other hand, if I'm enjoying a libation, and knocking out some "country" stuff, I like the ole spring. Lots of it. ;)

Btw, The last iteration of Yamaha's MagicStomp does one of the best emulations of this.

^^+1 on this
'cept not a whole lot, just enough to hear it kick in.

Using the Plate algorithm for general purposes on my Space the most these last weeks. So much awesome stuff in that unit though. The otherwordly reverbs are great for just tripping out.
For surfy stuff though, the Spring is best and I use my Belle Epoch (or Supa Puss) for slapback echo in front of the amp and Empress Tape Delay for longer cleaner delays in the loop.

As far as reverb goes, I tend to gravitate towards the Hall reverb. Spring doesn't do much for me, because it's almost like a late reaction. You'll play a chord, and the chord itself sounds dry, and then the reverb follows behind, and if I want reverb, I want the chord to sound wet as well, along with the reverb.
