What's your most hated PUP

Re: What's your most hated PUP

I hated the alnico pro II both bridge & neck. Found them to be excessively bassy and it has a spongy feel when you pluck the strings. Took them off my Gibson slash lespaul after just a month.

So many to choose from...maybe the plain "Epiphone" branded stuff from the '80s and early '90s?

That's your most hated pickup? Sounds like you haven't played many then ;)

Probably the lipstick-tube Invader. To me it failed to capture the punch and bass response of the original.

You know what they say...you can put a lipstick-tube on a pig, but it's still a pig ;)

My real answer: The Epiphone Wax Bricks. Factory equipment in a 2004 MIK Epi LP Custom. They were buzzy and monotone, with nothing of the three-dimensional properties that so many great PAF-type pickups have. They were replaced with Gibson Burstbuckers 2 & 3.

OMGZ I HAET THE JB HORRIBLE HIGH MID SPIKE!!11!!

J/K, I actually love that pup, lol. :)

The PRS SE stock pickups were kinda meh. I still have them around.

EMG HZ's were kinda disappointing. Not completely unusable, but they were kinda weaker and thinner than I expected. The H3 in particular.

Anything for bridge position with vintage output. A pup doesn't have to be wack to sound vintage.

Re: What's your most hated PUP

Rickenbacker neck pickups. They're the same wind as the bridge and you can't lower or adjust them. Most useless ever.

Ive had a few mate. Other pups that I dont like were Dimarzio Evolution bridge & SD Jazz neck. I like the gibson 57 classic +, JB & gibson burstbuckers

EMG 85. Muddiest neck pup ever.

I used to think so, in my neck-through Kramer, but then I put the EMG active concentric bass/treble control in that guitar. Fixed it right up.

Later I took another guitar that was bolt-on instead of neck-through, and I put an 89R in it, which is basically an 85 in humbucker mode. Nicely balanced.

Re: What's your most hated PUP

I see nothing positive coming out of this thread. There is a great guitarist ripping it with every pickup mentioned on this page.
