What's your "secret weapon" pedal

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

Lew, the deal with Klon Centaurs is that they actually enrich the natural sound of your amp, while adding volume and gain. Most pedals will give you volume or gain, but yank away some of the natural harmonics of your amp at the same time. The Klon is successful because it's bouncy tube-like feel under the fingers, and the tone is basically like walking up to your amp and nudging up the volume and gain. It's not an aggressive buzzy pedal, it sounds like natural amp overdrive. That's why they cost so much, and also why it's the benchmark on harmony-central, where the reviews are either great, or they're written with an alterior motive, looking to take pot shots at them.

Set for clean boost at the end of the chain!!

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

No huge secret but my Spina modded Ts9dx flippin rocks. It is a complete 1000% upgrade from stock.

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

Well my rig is constantly changing, but my secret weapon is my blues guitar lessons. It always makes for interesting flairs in songs/solos for a band that sounds like Taking Back Sunday/Thrice.

As far as gear secret weapons goes, I'm going to be building my own overdrive pedal as soon as the parts come in from smallbear, and since I got my CE-3 in I've been leaving it on all the time with the speed at a little above the minimum and the depth at about 1:30... really thickens up the sound. Its one of those things you notice when it isn't on. We'll see.

I've also got plans for new speakers for my cabinet and a new head... both of which will be complete shots in the dark to see how they sound. Hopefully it works out on both fronts.

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

The weapon of choice is the HBE "Big D"

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

Either....
Uni-Vibe, you can set it up to be just barely noticable up to really "there". Unlike a flanger or phase where you are then playing the effect, the Uni-Vibe just adds motion underneath the solo/rhythm sound. I love the way it sounds on the Alive solo, and at least half the reason I bought it. (To get that tone)

EHx POG - This thing is awesome. You can sound nothing like a guitar, and through my Roto-Machine and with a volume pedal I could fool a regular audience into thinking there's an organ on stage. It's that amazing. I wouldn't be surprised to see a POG player in some band in the future. where hew only plays a POG or other keyboard like effect (Micro Synth, etc.)

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

For your rig, I'd suggest an EQ pedal like the Tone Jam Sniper Mod.

In my case, a Yamaha MagicStomp is the centerpiece of my board. It has reverb, EQ, delay, pitch shift, modulation, and a whole lot more. I just got an email from ZZounds that they're blowing 'em out for $119.

SpinaMod SD-1

Best dist pedal... ever.

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

Used to be Boss EQ...GE-7, I think.

You can use it as an EQ or to slam the front end of the amp. I used it for changing my EQ modestly during a song...great for texture. I've sworn off of effects mostly, but if I go back to them this will be my first addition.

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

Mine in my live rig is a fulltone clyde deluxe. I don't use it all too often, but when I do...damn. That thing smokes.

My secret weapon on my recording setup is an aphex guitar xciter between my PODxt and computer.

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

Mine is a comination of two pedals.....a Boss DD-20 and a BF-2.

The DD-20 is used so that only the repeats come through (no dry signal), and these repeats are fed into the BF-2, then mixed back with my dry tone at the amp. I also do the same trick with a CE-2, and sometimes I'll run both.

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

I don't know that I have any secret anything. I have a lot of pedals, but I don't really use that many of them when I play. Usually it is some kind of overdrive or boost. I love my TS-10. It is a very under appreciated pedal IMHO. In fact the whole Ibanez 10 series of distortions and overdrives is under rated.

I also have a DOD bifet preamp. Another sleeper if you will. It does what the Klon does for much cheaper. I've never tried the Klon so I can't compare the quality, but it really gives a nice boost without coloring the sound too much. I bought it used for $20!

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

I'm really not qualified to say I have a secret weapon but I've really found a lead tone that does it for me in the Keeley modded Boss MT-2. It's got this great midrangey, vowely, almost wah type tone that I'm really lovin'.

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

I personally need the whole board, it all gets used alot.

SD1>Big Muff>Cry Baby>Park Fuzz Sound (3 knob coloursound clone)>Boss Phaser>Visual Sound H2O>EHX Memory Man>Whammy

Re: What's your "secret weapon" pedal

It has changed over the years. It used to be an old blue MXR 10-band EQ that I used to warm up the front end of a SUNN Solos II SS 212 combo.

These days, it's a DOD FX10 Preamp that is the first pedal in the chain on my board. Just a little extra treble, and a little bit of boost always on to "reclaim" some signal loss on the way to my amp. A very sneaky little pedal that no one knows about.

Ooops!
