What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

My first one was so bad I ended up smashing it....just to see what it was like to do it.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

I couldn't get rid of mine fast enough.

We were on a family vacation to China when I was 15 or so, and after a year or two of pestering my folks finally let me get an electric guitar. It was a cheap Strat copy branded "Godman".

I don't actually remember whether it was any good or not - all I remember is that I was heavily into Slash and thought that Strats were for pansies, so I sanded off the name on the headstock and somehow sold it for a small profit.

That started me down the road of flipping gear, which allowed me to experience a LOT of guitars in a relatively short period of time, which has happily lead to me launching my own guitar blog and starting relationships with local retailers and the like - so I can't say there are any regrets there!

My first guitar was a Vester with EVH style stripe graphic I bought when I was 15 by washing all the used cars at my dads car dealership ,the guitars come up for sale on the local auction site every now and then and I must say I'm always tempted

Holy poop I did the same thing. We played a Sweet Sixteen party and I bashed the hell out of it.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

Currently loaned to my brother-in-law. It's getting played more than I would play it.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

I have both my first guitar and my first bass, as well as the first bass I learned on, which I played for 8 or 9 years before getting my own. (It was my dad's.) I really don't need any of them. I guess I just keep them for the sake of sentimentality. Though I may sell the '77 Music Man fretless and the '96 G&L fretless, since I honestly don't think I will ever play them again, and the Music Man actually has a decent amount of value now. I will probably never sell my '85 MIJ Strat, though.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

I took my first one apart a dozen times and spray painted it... it was so ugly it had to sneak up on a puddle just to get a drink!

No regrets in that ugly betty.

I do regret selling off others though.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

My first one got stolen, but it would have probably ended up in the trash anyway. Only the bridge pup out of the Memphis supers treat worked, and both strap buttons had come loose, so I replaced them with drilled holes and coat hangers looped thru and made into hooks. Nearly gutted me a couple times. And for some reason someone stole it.

Pshhhht... I have a Cort X-1 (which is pretty much the best guitar ever made) for my first guitar... I would never sell it.... Both for sentimentality and because it kicks a-s-s

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

I've no idea what what it was, but it wouldn't have made the grade as firewood - long since gone and no regrets...

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

Charvel M4 from 1988. I learnt everything about guitar teching on this guitar. I sold it with a heavy heart because a) wide necks aren't for me and b) it's a Floyded SuperStrat and it simply wasn't getting played as much as my more characterful guitars. Still, it was a wonderful guitar and one I truly loved. No regrets over having had it nor over having sold it.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

First one in August of 1977 was a used '76 Natural finished Ibanez LP. Really wish I still had it but I sold it to buy my first Flying V, a Grande Wine Red copy. I WILL have another like the first. :scratchch:naughty::eyecrazy:

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

I learned how to play on a 54 ES125 that was my Dad's, and now is my Brother's. I played that for a couple of years.

MY first guitar was a POS MIK Dean superstrat that I mocked as I threw it into the garbage can after getting a.real guitar at Southworth Guitars...a 1976 58ri Explorer..

So my thoughts are, whatever is appropriate for the individual, but that Dean was only good for firewood...and that is being generous.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

Played someone else's fender strats from maybe '74 until got my first in '77. I was the drummer back then so guitar was extra but realized I could play it all night long without bothering anyone so did lots of that many nights while growing up. Kept my '77 for about 30 years and I think someone must have "borrowed" it while we renovated the house. I actually owned that electric as a kid before ever owning even a cheap acoustic guitar. Tri-colored sunburst, typical fender with tortoise pick guard. Now, I'm building a replica of it from Warmoth with (probably) SD SSL-1's.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

I got my Stella acoustic second-hand in the UK in 1966 when I was ten. I still have it. The frets are badly spaced and it's impossible to get more than a few frets to play in tune. I originally used nylon strings on it. Later i went to steel. It has some holes from my adolescent experiments at amplifying it. Once i got into electric guitar, i tuned it to open E and taught myself slide playing. Years later i realised this guitar has the real deal authentic old blues sounds. I plan to remove the fretboard and fit a correctly-slotted board to make it playable.

So I've had this for 47 years, and it wasn't new when i got it. It's spent most of the last few decades as a wall hanging, but after all this time, i could never part with it. It's a great reminder of where i started. It still lives in the same sky-blue, unpadded gig bag i got for it so i could carry it on the bus to school (where i used to get lessons) all those years ago.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

First guitar was a POS that got dismantled and eventually discarded. Second guitar (Aria Pro II) was a nice instrument that I still have 33 years later.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

If your first one was crappy, give to someone else that's learning how to play. I have no sentimental attachment to guitars, they're tools. When a better one comes along that's like one I already have (especially if the price is right), I'll get it and sell the old one.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

I no longer have my first guitar (Aria classical), or my third (Yamaha acoustic). Becoss I don'ts plays grandpas gitars.

But I do have my 2nd guitar, the fender MIJ '62 reissue strat. been with me some 16 or 17 years now.

Re: What's your thoughts on forever keeping/getting rid of your first guitar?

My first guitar was a Fender MIM Strat. It was well built, but I didn't know the first thing about what to look for in an unplugged sound so the guitar sounded terrible. I tried quite a few pickups (including even the EMG Dave Gilmour set) and nothing could make it sound decent, so I sold it and never regretted it.
