I have my seventh guitar still. Bought it in December 1982. My first six were the Ibanez LP and Grande V above mentioned, then a 1978 Gibber The Paul, a Black 1976 Fender Strat, a Wine Red Westone LP and then a '67 SG that got away to quick. Held pretty tight to the good ones since.

I started on a Stella very much like Crusty's. Had it a few years but it was loaned to me so I returned it when I got my LP Firebrand. I can't see myself selling the LP save being offered a good deal more than it's worth.

My first guitar was an Epi Dot. I played the snot out of that thing for about six years. After three fret dressings it desperately needs a refret, otherwise would probably still be my number one guitar.

It makes a difference with the quality of your first guitar. Most people start off with cheap ones that aren't worth keeping as they progress in skill. If you happen to start off with a mid-level or high-end guitar, that's a whole different matter.

Personally, it was more an issue of having no amp for the longest time. I only had a knockoff of a headphone amp with no distortion channel. I ignored playing for almost 2 years because the sounds I was able to access wasn't even in the ballpark of rock.

My first was a Rocker brand Strat copy. It's actually a pretty cool guitar, but it needs a little love to get it back into working condition (too much nooby tinkering).

My first sounds and plays quite good. In fact, if I could go back in time I'd say to my young self, "Hey *******, just play this one for a while. Build skills and save money before buying more instruments."

I bought mine from a high school buddy. It's been taken apart, put back together, mishmashed parts, "professionally" rattlecanned by me in 88'. It started life as a Yamaha SE150 (I think). The pickup is from a Kramer something or other, the nut was hacked out and a Floyd nut was hacked in (don't remember why), neck was custom scraped for ease of shredding and the D'Addario sticker added for extra coolness.
I still pull it out from time to time and it has seen stage time. She's a green classic that I could never part with (who would want it!!??)..

Mine is long since smashed up and gone
I am not all that sentimental about the guitars I have had throughout time...
On the other hand the two CS Fenders I have now means something to me.

I think it would've been cool to keep my first guitar; however, gave it to a friend who was learning...just a cheap no name small strat.

Still got my first bass guitar. The ol' faithful 78/79 factory fretless Precision. I have no sentimental attachment to this instrument. The EMG-P pickup that it received in 1990 made the bass sound great into a Tascam 3¾ i.p.s. four track cassette recorder. The same pickup into a digital recording system sounded artificial. Recently, I tried a Bartolini 8S pickup. I'm happy again.

My first was a Kramer Classic that was universally regarded as sounding great, but I just couldn't gel with it for some reason - alder body, maple neck combo was just too bright for me. I did some questionable things to that guitar trying to tweak it before deciding to get rid of it for it's own good.

My "first" was a P.O.S. Memphis Les Paul copy. It was made of plywood, horrible pickups, and an extremely unplayable neck. I saved up for my second guitar, the Gibson Les Paul Custom which I still have to this day. The Memphis I pulled a Pete Townsend on and destroyed

My first guitar was an acoustic Lark. Sold t to a keyboard player n college. I don't really cont that.

My first electric (God bless my crazy parents for this) was my 1979 Les Paul standard. It is as much a part of me as my arms or legs. Never getting rid of it....

My first guitar was a hand me down piece of crap, from my second step father 20 years ago. It was a Session branded telecaster knock off.

As Morse inspired me to play guitar i just imagine it to be as cool as his Dregs days TeleStrat Frankenstien but it was so horrendous, I even made a plastic nut from the plastic of a vacuum accessory/attachment.

After about 1.5 years of playing and saving cash from working at KFC during high school, I finally found my second guitar (an 88 Fender HM Strat second hand in a local guitar store) which I'll never sell. She's a keeper!

I'm with the guys who have pointed out that quality needs to be taken into account as well as sentimental value.
The Kay acoustic guitar that I first learned to play on is long gone. In fact, while I owned it, I think it got loaned to friends, others came over and played it, and somewhere along the line it got sat on or something and the neck broke down by the heel.

The first electric, a 1979 Fender 25th Anniversary Strat, will stay with me for the foreseeable future. Even despite the fact it's not one of the best playing guitars I've owned.

Likewise with my second electric, a 70's Renaissance. I did sell it at one point, but bought it back. Then gave it to a friend who had no guitar. When he got a MIM Fender that he really liked, I got the Renaissance back. It just sat in the case until last year when I swapped the pickups. It sounds better now than it ever has, and so I play it more.

After these two, I did buy a few cheaper electrics in my poorer days including a Washburn A10V, a Nady Lightning, and a Treker shredder guitar which are all long gone.

My frist guitar was a Hamer with a JB/59 combo and Kahler floating trem... I had no idea what I was doing when I would try to change strings and broke one of the saddles... I calmly got up, smashed the crap out of it, then took the hardware off and slid the wood in our Ashley wood furnace, never looking back... Until I went to school to become a luthier... Then I regretted smashing it and tossing it...

As for the first guitar I built, I'll never get rid of it, but I will let my dad play it/keep it... I'll always get it back, he's more proud of it than I am!

My first guitar was an early '70s Yamaha FG200 dreadnought acoustic. "Amoreena." And though it doesn't get played much these days on account of me owning some much nicer acoustics, it still hangs on the wall in my living room and keeps me company.
