What's you're idea of a beginner amp?

Re: What's you're idea of a beginner amp?

I would have been delighted as a teenager if they had Vox Valvetronix amps back then. I had a Peavey Studio Pro 40 1-12 and a MXR Dist +.

I'm spoiled by my current home practice rig.....Valvetronix AD60 head on Bogner 2-12 cab. I like the head/cab setup the most, but you can find a lot of Valvetronix and L6 Flextone combos pretty cheap, and for home useage for a beginner, that's the way to go........less volume, built in tuner, variable wattage, headphone outs, all the FX built in.

Re: What's you're idea of a beginner amp?

My Vox AD15VT was my first amp... Still got it and still love it.

Headphones? :D :P
Seriously, I'd recommend that they go and try out all the amps that are in their price range, or get a "starter pack" guitar and amp set from, say, Fender, Ibanez, etc. Pick one :D
I'd say they take their affordable amount in cash to the store. Sort of like gambling, reduces their succeptibility to buying something out of their price range.

Fender Hot Rod Deluxe or Blues Jr.

Great Resale value, works fune, lasts for years, and you can grow into it, rather than grow out of it fast. The Hot Rod is loud enough for most clubs, so you can do your first gig/recital with it.

Re: What's you're idea of a beginner amp?

Hughes & Ketner Triamp maybe....

Just kidding- If you aren't gigging 30 watts is more than enough. Cube 30 if you can't decide what you want to play, Spider 30 watt if you like the fuzzy metal stuff, Something in a straight up Peavey solid state - good solid sound and reliability, or the Fender Blues Junior if you are into all things blues & tubes.

Re: What's you're idea of a beginner amp?

My first practice amp was a Fender Squier 15 and a DOD FX-56 American Metal box (yes, the purple one..lol). Sounded great the first few months until my ears got tuned in better. I wish half of what is available now was available then. It would've saved my parents loads of time from yelling, "TURN THAT DOWN!" :laugh2: :laugh2:

The Roland Cubes, Vox Valvetronix and Line 6 stuff is great if you want to look at modelling. If you want something non-modelling, the Fenders mentioned are really good and the smaller Crates as well, especially the Palamino. Heck, I've got a GX-15 that's 10 years old.

Re: What's you're idea of a beginner amp?

Blues Jr if you can afford it, Line 6 if not.

That said, my first amp was a combo of a Fender Super Reverb & a Gibson bass amp :)

+1

Plus they're hard to break, so someone not quite use to the whole idea of taking care of stuff yet won't destroy it.

If you need it to sound better, run a descent pedal into the clean channel.

Re: What's you're idea of a beginner amp?

Here's a shocker for you. I like L6 products. I praise them frequently.

But I cannot recommend the Spyder. The ones I've played only have the L6 amp models.

The Vox Valvetronix is :cool3:, though. As is the Roland Cube.

Bang/buck solidstate amp: Peavey Bandit 112.

i agree on that one. with little worries, that the cubes provide to
much possibilities to play around instead of practicing guitar :laugh2:

my first amp was an marshall mg15 - i really hated it and wouldn't
recommend it

Re: What's you're idea of a beginner amp?

My first amp was a Crate GX-15...still have it too (my 6yr old daughter uses it).

If it's tubes you want, get a Blues Jr.

Solid state, I can't say more good things about the TECH21 stuff...a Trademark 10 would be a very nice first amp ...but my favorite is the Trademark 60. :D

Heck yeah. Can't forget about that one. That was my second amp. Our keyboardist/rhythm guitarist has one with a Sheffield speaker and the transtube technology. Killer amp. I used it last Friday after my Marshall went down. It cut through nicely and the tone was not bad at all. I was rather surprised.
