I only really got one amp worthy of gigging, my krank revolution 100 watt /mesa 4X12 cab. Granted, it can be a little overkill sometimes for some smaller shows, but its nice to have the extra power there in case you need it for an outside gig or somthing bigger.

i use a strange rig: a powered full range PA: JBL EON with a 15, and a horn, total about 150 watts- sometimes 2 of em for stereo...I gotta send guitar, guitar synth, bass pedals & looping through it.

Re: When gigging or playing live, which size amp & cabinet do you use?

I have, and will continue to gig with my Marshall 2210 through (2) 412 cabs with G12T75's...... although rarely only through one 412 and even rarer still through (4) 412's if the conditions are right...(it's all sitting in the trailer anyway!)

...one of the the things that has continuously puzzled me is why all 100w amps are considered to be "overkill", when even I rarely run more than 50w max!....(my amp pushes 185w max!.....but I never use all of it...!)

I've played gigs where a Fender HRD was twice as loud as I would ever even consider playing.... but as soon as I set a full Marshall stack up...everyone just "assumes" i'm going to be "way too loud"....only to respond later..."that was perfect"

Getting 20w out of 100 is easy, getting 100w out of a 20w amp is impossible...(plus which "maxing" an amps design is usually pretty hard on it!)

FWIW...

Depends on the gig:
small gig - 1x12 18 watt combo
little bigger - 1x12 18 watt combo with two rock 1x12 extension cab or 30 watt Class A head and the two rock 1x12 cabinet.
medium sized gig - 30 watt class A tube head and an avatar 2x12 cabinet
large gig - Vox TonelabSE - peaveay classic 50/50 tube power amp (bridged for 100 watts), Avatar 2x12 cabinet.

50/100/120 watt head into a Genz-Benz 2x12 G-flex cab. Easier to lug but pushes some SERIOUS air.

I voted a 1x12 combo although in fact I use a 1x10 combo, but that was not an option. It's a Laney LC-15. A really cheap, little all-tube amp, but mine has proven to be a real workhorse. I have gigged it regularly since Oct 1998 and it never gave me any problems (except for having to retube regularly).

40 watt 2x10 fender custom Vibrolux, miked. I play everything from 100-max clubs to outdoor festivals with it. Occasionally I use my 18/30/38 watt Blue Angel into two 1x12s, and very occasionally both rigs in stereo.

I use 60watt Marshall heads for easy-ride metal riffs and Ashdown FA 60watts for hardcore thrash riffs. It is hard to use only one amp for everything. The truth is that nothing is suitable for everything.

Live i use a 120w Peavey 5150 head into a Marshall 4x12 1960A
