"When I Hold You" my most Depeche Mode yet?

Re: "When I Hold You" my most Depeche Mode yet?

cool dude! good singing. Id leave it as is. I like how the guitars compliment the singing, you hit some really right notes there on vox.

Thanks for listening everdrone and the comments, I appreciate it.
The old problem, when is anything ever really finished. I guess it's when you add something else and it ruins it. I'm leaning towards leaving it too. I do wish the guitar tones were better but I don't have better gear right now.

Re: "When I Hold You" my most Depeche Mode yet?

That songs sounds really good. Are you a one man band? I have the same problem with finishing tunes also. You should leave it and work on another song and then comeback to this one. Play it a few times and see how you like it then. Very good music man

Thanks for the comments, Inhuman, VTHT and markk, I appreciate the time to listen and the feedback! I can't think of anything else to do so you guys are probably right in leaving it alone.

Inhuman,

Yes it's a one man band right now.

I think the guitars are very fitting, don't change a thing mang! You really know how to churn out some good tunes and your mixing skills are far beyond so many other guys that play around with this stuff. I think I read somewhere with an interview with Thom Yorke from Radiohead that one of the hardest things to do was to hear a song played back and not mess around with it any further. It's almost a compulsive thing to keep editing even to the point of screwing up stuff.

Thanks 90's mang! I agree with TY, It's hard to get perspective when you're too close to something. As far as song writing after 25 years of doing it I'm getting better and now can recognize the crap faster and just throw those away. I'd still like to be better at mixing...glad it sounds good to you.

i'm in agreement with everyone else. keep it the way it is. love the vocals especially. your reverb sounds good.

Re: "When I Hold You" my most Depeche Mode yet?

That's pretty rad man. I gotta ask: how do you make those electronic drum beats and general electronic sounds? Please don't say MIDI.

Re: "When I Hold You" my most Depeche Mode yet?

Midi. ;) Thanks man. :)

I sequence most of it by hand in Logic's sequencer. I use Native Instruments Battery, Rob Papens Predator and UHe's Zebra VST instruments as my go to sounds. I was a dance music producer and remixer for several labels and made hundreds of EDM (electronic dance music) tracks over the years. It's a lot of work to get up to speed, it took me years to learn how to do it at a high level.

There are some tutorials on Youtube for Trance, Progressive House and HipHop, I like to use elements of all of them. Hope that helps!

I gotta say, I'm really digging the percussion on it. Did you use just one of the programs you mentioned for everything that's going on, or do you use seperate programs to add something small, like say, a clicking sound?

Re: "When I Hold You" my most Depeche Mode yet?

I used NI Battery for the drums and percussion. You can layer different samples to make each sound, that's the trick is building complex drum hits. I usually use three or more different kick samples just to get the main kick drum then compress it and eq, tune it etc. Same with the snare and other percussion. The VST synths, Predator and Zebra have a lot of sounds that I tweak. I record everything to audio files then I can mess with them some more if I need to.
