When playing with others do you use reverb?

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

I like reverb for practising at home or recording but I never use it when playing with a band. In a band setting if it's set low I can't tell the difference and if I turn it up it detracts from the clarity and precision I like to hear. If I want a reverb-like effect I use a delay pedal set for tasteful ambient repeats.

This is exactly what I do. I use it all the time in the studio just to add some atmosphere, but I never use it live. I let the room reverb do the thing, and I'm usually running a short 1 or 2 repeat delay if I want a reverb-y effect. If the amp I'm using happens to have reverb, I'll put it on 3 if it sounds better that way.

Honestly unless I were playing for ambient stuff or in a surf band, I don't think I'd ever have a reverb pedal or tank in my rig. I had a Verbzilla at one point and it just seemed redundant for what I do.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

I think with a band really good use of it at the board is better than as an individual instrument effect (with some exceptions as when used as an "effect" as on Don't Fear The Reaper, That sounds like @$$ with out that big tanky verb sound IMO - but that's on one guitar for the lines

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

Depends on the song. AC/DC rhythm not so much but for a solo maybe. Couldn't imagine trying to solo "Comfortably Numb" or "The Pusher" without it. On voice it's extremely helpful. Would you want to listen to Bono without reverb?

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

i usually use my old deluxe reverb for gigs regardless of the band. reverb sits at 3

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

I'm playing modern worship stuff almost exclusively and if you are not DRIPPING with Digital Reverb you don't get the gig.
At home I play a LOT straight into the amp with no effects at all but when I play out I have to use a LOT of reverb in this setting. Not only use verb but verb with SHIMMER as in what I'm doing everything sounds like U2 on steroids :alcoholic:rolleyes::argh:.
Guys THIS is why you see threads from time to time from Worship players struggling on how to get the tones we are forced to try and get. Many worship leaders want us to pull this stuff off like the CD if we want the gig so---.
This means buying something like a Stryman Blue Sky or Hardwire Supernatural verb and knowing the right settings or sitting down.
Example this is classic modern worship stuff using a Stryman or Supernatural.

AND that is why I switched from Conservative gospel to traditional and shout music. They almost want your guitar to sound like a synth when you play and a acoustic with a capo is almost a must. Conservative is a whole lot easier to play but if you don't have the effects it's a lil bit harder. I managed to pull this song off with just verb and dirt from my amp from my amp luckily I had a good keyboard player with me on that gig.

I understand bro and I also attempt to pull a lot of the mush out on the arrangement's of the stuff I do. However when I get hired in to work with teams if I want the gig I have to pull these tones off. FWIW the Hardwire Supernatural verbs will pull this stuff off for far less $$ than the Stryman and even if you just use them as conventional verbs sound fantastic!!
Let's face it those of us who do a lot of this modern worship stuff are in our own little musical world!
I had never heard the Hillsong you posted BTW and I think I may use it THANKS bro!

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

No problem you also might want to check out Christ Tomlin and also Israel Houghton as well.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

A touch of verb is nice, if you've got good pups and real clean wiring/shielding... Can be hella annoying with feedback if not, though.

Delay? Great EFFECT, but bloody annoying and sometimes migraine-inducing if used non-stop for everything in minute quantities, especially over gobs of gain or, worse yet, fuzz. Worst part? Sometimes you just don't realize some guy's even doing that, and a couple hours later, I just HAAAATE him and can't even understand why, until I see his amp's/pedal's settings.

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

Verb alters my tone on my blues deluxe, I was using it all the time but i use gain all the time. Distortion seems smoother now, im on a search for a echo pedal now

Re: When playing with others do you use reverb?

I love my reverb. I have an Eventide Space that I use for my classic rock solos. It is great on my Page/May/VanHalen stuff and never gets mushy.

Ken if you are using the verb pedal in the front of your amp then using the amp gain for your crunch that is your problem. Adding distortion after the verb sounds REALLY nasty. However if you drop the verb into the effects loop (along with your delays and modulation effects) so the verb is getting the distorted signal not the other way around it will smooth the verb with crunch out big time. TRUST me here and try it bro before you abandon that verb pedal. It's a whole new WORLD running a verb pedal like that and not having the verb effect itself distorted!

I second that statement.
