Best woman tone ever was in a pos short scale guitar with a Phat Cat in the neck and a little gain on the amp. The shorter scale made the strings looser and the bass was all creamy with the gain.
Same. Every Randall I’ve owned was amazing, in general and not just for the price. The Rh200G2 was a hell of a plug ‘n’ play metal amp. Clean boost, two gain modes, voicing switch and a very sweepable contour! Tight, smooth and very loud too.
I say the most surprised by an amp I played lately is the Fender 100B Bassman solid-state head I got for $125. I was just looking for something to practice with but the thing is a tone monster. I think a half dozen or more bass players have played the amp and all were blown away by the tone with the exception of one tube snob. The cool thing is like traditional Fender Bassman amps it sounds fantastic with guitar. My bass player is hunting the web for one right now.
I didn’t know what I had was basically a hopped up RG100 until I looked into it, which was a surprise because it’s so good for the under $200AUD I paid for it, I’ve still kept it alongside the $2000+ amps I have.

My little tiny 20 watt Mesa Boogie 1/10 Subway Rocket combo consistently surprises me when I hear a recording of this amp miced in the FOH. Sounds pretty decent on stage yes but not anything like the little monster does miced out front.
Like here running nothing but a little verb and delay in the loop at super low stage level and miced with a SM 57.
This tone surprised me. The first half is My Jackson DK2's MIDDLE pup. (a lil Screamin Demon). Who say's middle pup's are useless?? :bigthumb: Then I switched over to the Lace Deathbucker (@ 2:10 min) in the bridge for the latter half....one of my favorite bridge humbuckers (so no surprises there. It always kicks arse!)
While there is very little tasteful self-restraint in this clip, That's the way I like things & I do wuv the wicked chewy/grainy shredalicious lead tones! Forget what amp this was but probably my 30W Cicognani Brutus Live.. :bigthumb:
