Where can I find cab designs and handles?

Re: Where can I find cab designs and handles?

That was very very useful!

Thanks a lot. I will follow that design.. The only difference is that I will have the back cover as two pieces one narrow one, on which the jack will be placed, and a big one to open or close...

Can you please tell me if the centre wood goes all the way and touches the baffle?

thanks again!

Re: Where can I find cab designs and handles?

more-gear-than-skill has given you lots of excellent info and great pics.

My cab is essentially the same apart from the "floating" baffle concept. The corners of the cab were dowel jointed with triangular cleats used as reinforcement. Choice of baffle thickness and material is often debated. The depth of my cab is 9 inches (23 cm) which is a bit "shallow", but we wanted to keep weight minimized.

THe fender cab in the pics looks to be about 10 inches to 11 inches deep ....is that correct?

the splitter does go into the baffle.

Like in this pic, you see a bit of ply board, with a little block of cleat wood attached (that the rear cover screws into) Well its another block of the same against the baffle. Screwed in from inside.

Notice however that top-to-bottom wise, it's not "entirely" sealed, air tight. Don't know why, but it makes me believe that it's more for cab stiffness and baffle stability than for speaker isolation (from each other)

Your idea of a 2 part back is pretty sweet. Hey maybe a three part, for all points between sealed and open!

Good luck. Post pics when built. and beware putting too much power in when the back's off....the speaker travel is extreme, and can hurt it.

Re: Where can I find cab designs and handles?

MGTS thanks a lot bro... These pictures really guided me... I ll post mine when this cab is done.

btw I am considering a tilted baffle (like the yellowcabs) and insted of a top handle or side handles I ll just cut a piece of the side planks off and create a holder (again like the yellowcabs)

I am still thinking about the tilted cab.

Meh... I might just stick with the tried and well know methods! a stright cab is safer!

Thanks again for the pictures, they were VERY helpfull.

Still curious about the baffle material & thickness and the depth of the Fender cab....if you have a minute.

Thanks

Sorry Dave, I'm losing my mind...I can feel it. Check out the fender field guide for the range of cab dimentions. I suspect that mine is actually a 2x12 bassman cab. http://www.ampwares.com//ffg/bassman_blonde_6G6-A.html

quoted as 11.5 inches deep (outside). The baffle....well thats another story. When i bought this cab, is was so far from stock (re-grilled, recovered, re-speakered, tilt-legs missing, new glides etc... That i was not too concerned with vintage spec. I noticed the baffle had water damage and was generally in a rough state. I took it out and took it to the wood shop, where they copied it in plywood. The ply was nearly an inch thick. But it's not the supreme marine or baltic ply. Just a nice basic.

I've tricked myself into hearing a spankier, tighter, more controlled sound, especially at volume...

see this one, with the original dampening etc http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-1962-Bl...074QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item130078458890

Thanks for the answers, More-Gear-Than-Skill

With an almost 1 inch thick baffle, I can see why you would be hearing "tighter" sound.

fingerace...
Got the cab design finished?

Any pics of the cab as it is being built?

Any proposed date of completion?

Curious Dave

Re: Where can I find cab designs and handles?

Hey greco,

I have the design completely finished it my head right now, construction wise... I ll put it on paper this weekend with complete dimensions and thickness of materials.

I ll talk to the carpenter on monday most probably and find out what wood is going to go for the sides and back of the cab. I ll give him all the time he needs to hunt down everything I need because I know that he won't be using the same materials as he does for kitchen cupboards!

A good friend of mine has a clothes shop and sells all kinds of fabrics, from grade A costume cloth to cheap synthetic garden fence cloth.

I ll take him into a guitar shop and let him look and feel the grill cloth of many amps, and see if he can find something suitable for me.

The cab is going to be finished before the end of April (most probably)! Yeah I know it's a long time, but I have school exams and the kitchen of my new home has priority for the carpenter :laugh2:

As for pictures, maybe I ll pop into the guys shop as he is working on the cab and take some pictures for you guys as he is working on it, we ll see about that...

Re: Where can I find cab designs and handles?

Hey I just had an idea!

Would it be cool to make a a cab which has one 12'' and one 10'' speaker?

Plus that open back with a single speaker which can be 15'' !

What do you think?

I think that either of those could be very cool..but I don't have any experience to back this up.

It will be interesting to see what others think.

Also, thanks for the update re: design and construction of the cabs.

Re: Where can I find cab designs and handles?

No problem Dave...

So what do you guys think? Should I just stick with the 212 design?

What does a 10'' speaker got to offer?

Thanks

Re: Where can I find cab designs and handles?

Different speakers sizes may sound original but usually it's best to go with only one size.

Re: Where can I find cab designs and handles?

Yeah, you 're probably right for that one... What about the single speaker? Should I make it a 15''?
