where to buy gutted Gibsons Flying V or Explorer?

if you're familiar with the stratosphere on ebay which takes mostly Fenders & Gibsons and parts them out for sale. Well that is basically exactly what I'm hoping for. A gutted Gibson body & neck. I'm fine with a used one. In fact, would prefer a used one really to cut down on cost.

My problem is...........I don't want a gutted les paul. V's and Explorers seem to be hard to find in general and gutted ones even more so.

Any help would be great. Thanks!

I've seen a few floating around eBay and reverb. Try adding "project," "body an d neck," and "husk" to your main search term.

If you're not afraid of finishing, I'm fairly sure precision guitar kits has Vs and Explorers.

Re: where to buy gutted Gibsons Flying V or Explorer?

Refinishing doesn't scare me but setting necks dies

No thanks on kits

Thanks for the help!

There's a sight called The Stratosphere, they have an eBay store as well as a online store of they're own, they also have the worlds largest supply of Fender/Gibson/ Charvell guitar parts! You should have no problem finding a body & neck for a good price? You can also get it with or without hardware??? Check them out, really nice people & they' ll go out of the way to make sure your happy! I buy 99% of my parts from them because they are only about 100 miles away from me so I get my order next day sometimes! They're a authorized Duncan dealer & they will even match prices if you find a lower price!

Did you read my post?
The Stratosphere doesn't sell kits but parted-out guitars, so a Gibson set neck would come to you assembled.

As far as the Precision kits, their name seems to mean something. Every post I've ever seen where somebody assembed one of their kits says that the neck joints are very tight and straight.

I think he means this post
Ah, yes... Derp. LOL

I have seen Gibsons other than LPs and SGs on The Stratosphere before... But that's really dependent upon availability, I guess. Currently they don't have any, but that could change today for all we know, if they have anybody posting listings on the weekend.

Re: where to buy gutted Gibsons Flying V or Explorer?

I think the only place you'll find gutted guitars is from Gibsondependable/stratosphere (or similar if they exist). I can't see too many private sellers going to the trouble of selling so many individual parts.

Re: where to buy gutted Gibsons Flying V or Explorer?

Buy a used Gibson and sell the parts you don't want.

Re: where to buy gutted Gibsons Flying V or Explorer?

Gibsondependable has always had a large selection whenever I did run across their ads, but not a lot of variety. Mostly Faded Vs and SGs requiring the large pickguard and dot inlays, and lots of Studios. Prices seemed reasonable to me on the Vs and SGs, though - don't think I saw one for more than $250 BIN - typically under $200 BIN.

However, when stripping parts off bodies, some people go too far and remove the pieces you can't find or replace readily, like the bridge and tail inserts. The actual bolts you can find or make if you're handy with a lathe, but the inserts are a different matter IMO. The outer grooves bite into the wood to keep them seated, but once removed, you'll have trouble keeping them in. Given that so many parts are brand-specific, it seems counter-productive to remove the mounting posts for the bridge (especially import Floyd-style bridges), but people do it anyway.

Re: where to buy gutted Gibsons Flying V or Explorer?

As a place selling the bridge separately, it would seem counter intuitive to sell the bridge unit without the specific wood inserts. And bridges/tailpieces I've found often do come with the bushings

And a dab of glue to hold the bushings works, or otherwise a dampening of the wood to swell it before installation.

I was about to say the same thing. If you have a guitar with inserts loose enough that it's a problem, you ought not be working on your own guitar.

Re: where to buy gutted Gibsons Flying V or Explorer?

If the bushings and posts come with the body, then the buyer only has to find the bridge, not the entire assembly. Not to mention how the finish may get damaged when extracting the bushings.

But I do realize there are people out there who prefer to completely strip a guitar of every little piece so they can nickel and dime buyers to death, like selling tuners and their mounting screws separately.

Who does that?
