Re: Which amp do you gig with the most (and what type of music do you play)?
I use Mesa Boogie amps and cabs. I have:
DC-3 112 V30 Combo, with a 112 EVM Theile cab, or by itself for small venues and jams;
Mark III EVM Combo with EQ, Simul-Class and Reverb; with a 112 EVM Theile cab, and--I have a second, recently acquired Mark III combo with a Celestion G-100 (which has a much more aggressive mid-range tone than the EVM);
Mark IV EVM Combo, with a 112 EVM Theile cab;
Maverick 212 V30 Combo, with a 212 V30 Horizontal Recto cab;
Mark III 200-watt Coliseum Head with EQ and Reverb and a Mesa C90/EVM 412 Half-Back cab.
The Mark III half stack is just a glorious sounding amp, but I have to be able to turn it up to about 3 on the Master on the half-power setting. The Mark III combos are also delicious; and with the EVMs and the Theile cabs, these little 1/4 stacks can easily compete with anybody's halfstack.
The Maverick 212 with the 212 Recto is a nice little "low power" stack. The Mav is a terrific amp--with AC-30, Twin Reverb and Marshall Plexi tones at my fingertips.
The Mark IV combo is terrific for recording, but very good for live use when I don't know the venue...there are lots of options to tailor the power amp from 15 watts to 85 watts and lots of stops in between. I usually just set the Mark IIIs and the Mark IV in the recommended sweet spots and just play...no real tweaking needed.
The DC-3 is a real screamer, and sounds bigger than 35 watts. In my old band we did one gig at a club, with my other guitarist using a 5150 full stack. Not only did I get a lot of compliments from the audience and the staff--I was the one the sound guy asked to turn down!
My current band is G/B/K/D and we're doing oldies and classic rock covers, blues, country, jazz, fusion, bluegrass--we do it all--and originals too. We're pretty low volume. I typically a G&L Legacy and a Legacy Special; and a 2HB guitar like a Les Paul, ES-335 or Ibanez GR-520 Ghostrider. And then I might bring an Ibanez 5-string banjo; a Martin D-28 or Taylor 710CE six-string acoustic; a Takamine EF381SC 12-string; and a DanElectro Innuendo 12-string electric--any or all of them, depending on the gig.
The trick is to have the right amp for the venue, and the right guitar for the song.
