Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Super D and the Duncan Distortion are different animals. The Super D is a warm, thick harmonically rich overdrive sound, while the Distortion is a sledge hammer.

I think the custom is seymours idea of the SD. I'll also say this. I'll play almost anything on my distortion, But I can play a lot of things really well with the SuperD. It's way more flexible than it gets cred for...

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Couldn't agree more.
The SuperD is extremely versatile for a high output PU, and if you back it off the strings you get a very convincing pseudo-PAF tone. Not mentioning the fact that it splits really well.

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

I have a SuperD and A Duncan Distortion. Not even vaguely the same creature.

I use the superD for classic rock, hard rock up to heavy metal (maiden etc) I use the distortion for hard rock, heavy metal and beyond (dokken, metallica etc..)

The SuperD has been around this long because it is simply a great pickup. everyone should have one. You should have more Duncans, but you need a superD too.

I put a Duncan Distortion in my old Ibanez and I think it might have been a bit too hot for my music. I sold that guitar a few years ago so my mind fails me.

If you want the Super Distortion go get a Super Distortion. It should be that simple...
If you want the coil splitting I believe their "Dual Sound" is that with the split option.

+1 Dimarzio has its own sound and so does Duncan. You are not going to get anything anywhere near that sound. Dual Sound would be your choice for splitting bro. If you need a brighter Super D, get a Super 2, or a Super 3 for darker sound. It's going to sound fantastic in that hardtail!

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

These kinds of threads are always dumb.

It's like: do you go to a car dealership for Honda's and say: "I want a car like the Mustang. Do you have any cars like that?"

Dude, no. If you want a Mustang, get a Mustang.

If you want a DiMarzio, get a DiMarzio.

If that's what the men at Dean told you to get, then go with it. Or maybe you should make a thread at the Dean forum asking about stuff like:

"Hay, guize, I want a Gibson SG Supreme. Which Dean comes close to it? The guys at Gibson told me that the SG Supreme was what I wanted. What is the Dean equivalent?"

lol.

All in all, this is just a hunch, but I think you want a. . . Super Distortion.

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

The only dumb question is the one that doesn't get asked.

It's not a matter of "want" because I don't know enough about pickups to want a specific kind. The question was which SD pickup is the equivalent to the DiMarzio.

I can see from the replies that there isn't a direct equal. I sincerely thank everyone for the input. I'll listen to some sound clips and make a choice.

I think you're right about the Custom being the closest....

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

while it may be the "closest" I wouldn't call it "close" I have each and they sound really different IMO. Custom is a bass/treble pup. superD is a bass/mid pup. I think the super d is more open.

If it's such a dumb question why are you even "replying" to it? Maybe the guy prefers the look of Duncans, with the logo on them? I prefer Duncans to DiMarzios, probably it's silly, but I do. Why take the urine out the guy for trying to learn?

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Hey, I work at Seymour Duncan and I can tell you we don't make a Super Distortion sound-a-like. I've had Super D's in a couple guitars, and I like them for certain things. In my hands, I don't find them as versatile as Aceman. But I usually have one in my collection. I usually pair it up with a Super 2 in the neck, which is another Dimarzio without a fair Seymour Duncan equivalent. (a Ceramic Full Shred neck would be close) I like this combo in a 24 fret guitar with coil splits to the inside coils. Those two inside coils together produce a cutting, funk rhythm that I like sometimes.

I have a Super 3 in another guitar, it's a little garbled sounding but it's very thick. It works well for solos but also soft picking clean tones with heavy effects. It's kind of "keyboard-like' in that way. I like the PATB Distortion better than the Super 3 but I don't have any guitars that I want to convert to all PATB's right now. Plus, when I do, I have a PATB wound to '78 specs that I will use first! So for now I'm leaving the Super 3.

Isn't the Super 3 what Phil Collen uses in his Jackson PC 1 bridge? I had planned on getting one of them myself, but they don't get great reviews and I find my JB can get a decent Def Leppard type tone anyway.

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Has anyone tried a Super D with an A2 magnet?

If he really wanted the logo, then he could just buy a DiMarzio and write "SEYMOUR DUNCAN" on it with a marker.

Why did I reply to it? I dunno! Why did you reply to mine! Let's be friends! I have many recipes!

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Yes! I got my baby back, baby back, baby back baby back!

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

The DP100 Super Distortion and the DP101 Dual Sound are exactly the same pickup. THe DP101 is shipped with a mini switch in the box.

Back in the day, the SD was a single conductor and the DS was a 3 conductor to allow spliting. They are both 4 conductor now.
