Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

I don't get (and I never will) why some people get their knickers in a twist because some bloke
"resurrected" an old thread. It's not your forum, and really, who cares anyways?

Anyhoo, my vote regarding the OP question is the SH-5 Custom. Not the same, but same ballpark.

Isn't the Nazgul closer regarding specs? The DCR is closer, my guess is the number of turns is too, it uses 43AWG too, and it has an oversized ceramic magnet as well. The Nazgul is all about treble and high-mid aggression, though. Funny how two pickups can have very similar specs and sound so different tonally.

Relax, bro...just enjoy the 10-year celebration! WOOT!: party::arms::fest7:

To be fair, the dude who bumped it added NOTHING to the conversation.

I don't care that he bumped it, but at least bump for something other than upping your post count!

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Historically, the SH-5 Custom was the closest thing. You'd have to swap in a double-thick Ceramic mag to get it even closer, of course.

Rex brings up some good points about the Nazgul. I didn't think it to be very "Super Distortion"-ish, but now I'd like to try them next to each other!

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

Neither the sh-5 and Nazgul are super distortion like in sound, only in material spec. There’s more to it than just the published materials data. The way the coils are wound, the properties of the metal with in the coils influence on inductance the materials used etc.. all can yield very different results. In any case if you want the super distortion sound, just buy a super distortion. They aren’t oddities, and are readily available.

What, no good? :nervous:

Well, at least it is still a valid topic even ten years later.

You questioned the statement about questions. :bigthumb:It's a statement that was in a recent thread.
So what's your conclusion ?:reporter:

Huh, What?

Just goes to show though, some people can't read.

I agree wholeheartedly with everything you have said here. Any experienced forum bro knows that there's no direct equivalent between virtually any Duncan and DiMarzio designs (or Suhr, Dean, Lollar, etc).

However, there are pickups that fall in a similar vein, have similar output, harmonic characteristics, brightness or darkness, etc.

I can tell an SH-5 and a Super D apart for sure, but when someone says "I want a Super D-esque sound, but it has to be made by Duncan", that's the closest pickup I can think of.

The Nazgul doesn't remind me of a Super D either, but it's been a while since I played either one and it would still be fun to try them side-by-side just for sh*t & giggles

Re: Which Duncan equals DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion?

I'd go with the sh-5 also. It's probably the closest you'd get from SD production models.
