I have heard you say this and I respect your opinion and your ears but, have you tried a Pearly Gates?
All right...I've used 490R's & '57 Classics, and A5's were such an improvement in them. They were SO dull & lifeless at first. Because of that, I haven't wanted to get any more A2 neck PU's. I like a REALLY bright neck, and have A5's in most of mine. Gotta have bite & sparkle for solos; I need to hear pick noise. I EQ my amp with a lot of mid & bass for the bridge PU, & maybe that's what makes an A2 too dark for me (could be me, not the PU, I admit it).
I've got a PGB in the bridge of a hollow body, but am thinking about yanking the A2 in it & putting in an A4. I've also got a 335 with A3/490R in the neck, and that's as dark as I'd want to go in a neck PU. In most of my guitars, that would be too dark. For neck PU's, I also use '59N, JazzN, 50SR, & Bluesbucker, and none are too bright. I have no reason to use a darker magnet.
That's why I qualified the A2 comment for "me & my guitars" (LP's, SG's, & 335's...no Fenders allowed). In a bright-toned body, I can see an A2 working well. Yes, you're right, I have not tried a PGN. Technically I should get one, but I'd probably still put in a brighter magnet. Call me hard-headed, but I believe what an A2 does in a neck, an A3, A4, or A5 can do better. At the same time, I respect your knowledge & experience, as it probably surpasses mine. All I want to do is offer another viewpoint, not necessarily one for everybody though.
