Which EMG's should I try?

I want to try some EMG's out. There going to be in a custom guitar with a maple neck, heavy wood body (mahongyish although I haven't decided yet), double cut-away, with a maple cap. I want to be able to play Metal along with other things so I would like it as versatile as possible. I am thinking either
85b/89n
85b/60n
or
89b/60n.
What do you think?

go for the 89/60 combo. The 89 sounds the same as the 85 but is splitable and therefore more versetaile.The 60 Neck is a great humbucker for cleans and rhythm.

Thanks chief. I've heard some clips with the 89 in the neck and it sounds awesome split I found that in those clips anyway I prefered it split.

if you consider the 60 you should put that in the neck since it is designed for the neck position. But if you're in for the 85 anyway go for the 89 since the difference in price is well worth the greater variety

89/60 seems like a good combo I just haven't heard the 89b yet. I like the tone so hopefully it's just as good in the bridge.
I haven't heard the 60 at all actually nobody seems to use it. Well that or they just don't record with it. If anybody's got a 60 please record a clip. Cheers

I could be wrong, but I think James Hetfield of Metallica uses 60's.

you are correct ever since he switched to emg from gibson and duncan pups he has used a 60 in the neck spot.

how about dual 89's? then you can split both positions and have the ultimate in versatility!!

^^ willing to bet has never owned EMGs

try 85/85 combo, its unusual but it's what i'd get if i got back into actives. if you need singlecoil options, make one/both EMG 89's.. these are versatile setups, IMO the 81 hasnt got a nice enough clean tone to be called 'versatile'

(saying that, 81 kicks ass under heavy gain)

I would go 85 bridge and 89 neck.

I think I'm leaning towards 89/60 at the minute. Are there any production guitars that I might be able to try one or both of these pickups in?

basically, yea. EMG says its this, but some folks say they can tell the difference. having owned them both in the same guitar, trying all the positions i could, i couldn't tell you which was which with me ears

i too am unable to tell a difference between the 85 and 89 tonewise. Since i never owned a SA is can't say that for the single coil sound but i guess it would sound the same as th SA

I'm not sure, since i've never tried the 89, but i've heard some people say that it lacks the balls\tone of the 85 and the SC-ish chime of the SA. I'm not sure though .

I love my 85, but it'll never be as good as a duncan for the parts where i need tone
