hey bros........ ive been listenin to Hendrix's "Fire" version he did at woodstock........and i realized that i want a sound similar to that for leads........ which fuzz pedal would be best for that?

ive basically narrowed it down to the Fulltone 70 or maybe the Roger Mayer Axis Fuzz

overall, i like Hendrixs fuzz sound from 69 and 70 better than say the Monterey type tone

Re: Which Fuzz Pedal do i want?

well he would have been using a Arbiter Fuzz Face silicon transistor pedal i suppose........but i suppose you havent seen the prices on those Scott? he he

Re: Which Fuzz Pedal do i want?

Get a 69 pedal. After A/Bing those two Fulltones, I liked the 69 better......it just had a more rich and pleasing sound. And there's just something cool about a big red pedal with 69 printed on it. LOL

Re: Which Fuzz Pedal do i want?

yes, indeed that would be cool........... but i wonder if it has enough gain? id probably be running whatever i get into vintage fender amps......... so pretty much a clean amp........ and id like to get a long sustaining lead sound with my strat.......

i think i like the idea of more gain that the 70 pedal has....

Re: Which Fuzz Pedal do i want?

I know lots of people are saying Fulltone...try the axis fuzz one time and you'll buy it and you'll loveit! Trust me on this...I have one and and it is my favorite fuzz tone...you can't go wrong with Rodger Meyer!!!

Re: Which Fuzz Pedal do i want?

check out the roger meyer website (do a search for him on google to find it) he talks about all the different fuzz pedals and what era of hendrix (or later) each is from, the axis fuzz was obviously used on the album axis bold as love.

Re: Which Fuzz Pedal do i want?

The '70 is a good silicon fuzz... lots of cut and more gain than the '69. However, you have to spend time tweaking it. The internal trimmer is key to the whole thing, and it controls the waveshape. I like both the '69 and '70. Silicon fuzz can sound rather dry compared to germanium fuzz, so be aware of the differences.

MJM makes the London Fuzz II which is another silicon fuzz. Check out the mp3's on the website.

Proanalog makes the Scary Face, which is a higher gain germanium fuzz. Some people say its the best, but I haven't used one. Scotty uses NOS Mullard trannys in everything, and is reportedly one of the best at the old-school, classic fuzz design.

Addrock has the Germanium Fuzz. The mp3's sound awesome, and an online buddy says it really is a super clean, high gain germ. fuzz. Let me see if I can find the clips..... here 'tis

Another great brand is LOVEPEDAL. Sean's great. He's more of a modern fuzz guy than an old-school, classic designer though. The lovepedal Karl is a killer box that I did a review of this summer. Also, the Black Beauty is very unique in that it combines the Rangemaster circuit with the Fuzz Face circuit (the 2 are cascaded) so that you can dial in the amount of FF gain from a basic Rangemaster tone to start with. The box uses NOS Mullard trannys, and sounds great. The guy with the Addrock clips has the black beauty on his website as well, and I must say its quite impressive.

Check out the websites by doing a google search. Fuzz is cool, each good one has its own personality....

Hello Hello-
The Hendrix sound from ' 69 - '70 is the Axis Fuzz . [In the studio he used lots of other stuff, though....]. The Axis circuit was installed inside stock Fuzz Face shells for live shows. Isle of Wight, Band of Gypsies, everything in that era is mostly Axis. Hendrix liked the Axis better not only with the Strat but because it was much more useable with the Gibson guitars he was playing.
The Axis through a Marshall is MUCH more "tweakable" then a stock FF.
Brian.

I keep saying the Austone Fuzznuts...but I don't know if any of you have tried one. It's a nice classic sound when you keep everything roughly in the middle, but as soon as you start twisting the knobs it becomes this dirty beast. Suprisingly it cleans up quite nicely when your guitar's volume control down. It's simply fantastic.
