Which humbucker for bridge slot will play nice with ....

Re: Which humbucker for bridge slot will play nice with ....

The SH-16 59/Custom Hybrid is a standard production piece.

I'm curious to know which stacked single sounds most like a true single when split. I think it could serve to improve the tone of the middle position. Problem is while some have tried a wide variety of stacks, not many split them. Whether it is because they sound great without having to split is another story.

It's also worth mentioning that the SH-12 will work great with a vintage stack without splitting. It also has a good split sound in the right guitar.

Gregory,

For my project, i am not planning to split the neck stacked single coil. Instead, I am planning to split the bridge humbucker and put it in combination with the neck stacked single coil. If you're talking about splitting the stacked singlecoil just as something that is interesting in general, I guess that's ok. But if its in relaton to my project, than I think there is a misunderstanding of what my project plans are.

Maybe this list of pick up selector switch options will help make it clear what I plan to do on this project:

Position 1: full bridge humbucker
Position 2: split bridge humbucker in parallel with neck stacked single coil
Position 3: full bridge humbucker in parallel with neck stacked single coil
Position 4: split bridge humbucker in series with neck stacked single coil
Position 5: neck stacked single coil

5-way blade in an Epi LP? Are you keeping all four knobs?

Splitting the stack was a general thought, though it may be pretty desireable for the series combination.

Yes, I plan to keep all 4 knobs... although the two for the neck will need to be replaced with 250K pots...

Ah, ok, thanks. I saw the word "hybrid" and thought it was a DIY item - there was a DIY hybrid thread active on this forum last week.

Area 58 is a good sounding pickup, but it won't be bright and strat-like in a Gibson scale guitar. When you put the Area 58 close to the strings it gets very warm and bluesy. The Noiseless pickups from other brands are likely to be warmer sounding. To make it brighter, 500k control pots seems like a good option. For the bridge pickup I would pair it with an alnico ii PAF such as the Duncan APH-1 or maybe something from Gibson.

Re: Which humbucker for bridge slot will play nice with ....

I'm wondering why the 58 and not the 67, of the noiseless DiMarzios.

Re: Which humbucker for bridge slot will play nice with ....

If you put an area 67 in a Gibson neck position it could be too bright with 500k controls. I think the 500k controls are the right choice if you want to keep a PAF in the bridge slot.

The Area 67 - and the SD ST4 for that matter (I listened/relistened to samples of all today) - are all solid candidates. I just happen to prefer the character of the 58 the most.

I gave this more thought... I am going to replace one of the 4 pots with a 5 position rotary switch. With the remaining 3 pots, I'll make 2 of them volumes and 1 master tone. I was never a fan of the pickup selector switch being located in the upper bout on Les Paul guitars anyways. The OEM pickup selector switch will go dead for now, maybe in the future ill make a killswitch out of it.

I've tried the S4 with both 500k and 250k...both are usable, but different. I like both. Currently, I am using 250k.

Re: Which humbucker for bridge slot will play nice with ....

i didnt like the stks4 with 500k pots, it had a strident high end i didnt care for. if you want a stack for the neck that sounds good with 500k pots id look at the stks6 or maybe the stks7, although ive only tried the s6. its not as vintage a tone but it balances well with a bucker in the bridge output and tonally

Re: Which humbucker for bridge slot will play nice with ....

...The Area 58 is noiseless, so if you split just the humbucker you will get noise, however.

You can also split the 58. If you like it that way but end up with hum then you can flip the magnet and reverse the wiring on the humbucker.

The Dimarzio Tech Support team just got back to me regarding some questions i submitted earlier this week. Per them, I will HAVE to split the 58 if I want hum-free results when combining the 58 with the split coil from the bridge humbucker. Interesting. Maybe that is what you were trying to point out earlier Gregory but I didn't understand until now, sorry.

The Area 58 arrived in the mail yesterday. I hope to install tomorrow as a limited test. Rotary switch hasn't arrived yet, so coil splitting & combining split coils across pickups is not feasible for now.

Also, final choice for bridge humbucker hss not been decided yet, let alone placed on order.

No humbucker I already own seems like a close match for what I would like on the bridge tonewise. However, since *something* has to go in the bridge slot for the first test of the Area 58, the available choices from my current on-hand stock are: a Gibson 490R, 496R, 498T, and Dimarzio Eric Johnson Custom *neck*. I'm leading toward starting with the 498T because its got Alnico 5 magnet and I'm thinking my final bridge pickup choice will be something PAF ish. Would someone recommend one of the other pups I mentioned as an alternate 1st candidate, and why?

Work and household responsibilities have delayed me from taking the next step in this experiment until tonight. Out of the available on-hand candidates for bridge position that I mentioned previously, I decided to first try the Dimarzio Eric Johnson Custom *Neck*. I don't own an EJ bridge pup, and also I wanted something that is 4 conductor because I am also going to incorporate a Blackouts Modular Preamp. This first trial will be standard 3 position wiring so I won't be splitting any coils on either of these pickups just yet. The goal for this limited experiment is to determine:

1) can a noiseless, vintage Strat voiced single-coil design hold its own in the neck position both by itself and in combo with a mild bridge position humbucker in a Les Paul style guitar

2) and can both pickups gain from the benefits of an active circuit via the Blackouts preamp, vs suffering from it

If I don't finish tonight, I will by tomorrow evening. I plan to record some audio samples and post them up.

I'm not familiar with the blackout preamp, so I want ask the following in relation to your project:
Will each pickup be wired to a separate blackout module, or do you switch the pickups into a single blackout module?
Do you know the input impedance of the blackout preamp module?

I finished wiring it up tonight but then was reminded that I hadn't yet filed the 4 holes in the body for the tone and volume pots, to fit the new wider 3/8" shaft pots that come with the Blackout Modular Preamp. Will resume tomorrow morning.
