Which is hot lead, single coil no-name

Hi folks,

I am setting up a git with 1 single no-name pickup. It looks like a stock Fender, but not sure if it is. Is there a way to determine this with an ohm meter or something? I realize I can listen and change the wires back and forth, but sometimes that is not as easy as it seems.

Sorry if this has been asked a lot before, hard subject to search for.

Project: Fender Starcaster neck on First act body, 1 single coil. Fender Hardtail style bridge. So far it is cool as heck.

Generally, the white wire is hot, black ground if those are your colors.

Thanks,
I should have stated I have black and whire wires which I know are Fender colors, just not sure this pup is genuine Fender.

Because you aren't trying to match the phase of another pickup, it won't matter, assuming the finish lead isn't also grounding any kind of baseplate or cover and it's insulated.

ya, that is part of the problem. I have it hitched up straight to output now, but have decided to put in volume and tone control. I have 2 mini 250k pots coming and I'm sure I have a capicator around somewhere.

I also have a Duncan Hot Rails that I might try in there, but I wanted to go simple 1st time around.

Not sure how it's part of a problem... if there's only one single coil pickup there's nothing to be out of phase with, so it won't matter which lead you use... unless the finish lead is connected to a baseplate ground or internal shielding.

+1 if it is a single pickup you need not worry which lead you use..

Thats a very nice looking guitar.

Thanks,
Got $46 bucks total in it right now. It is coming out very cool.

Doesn't matter. Even if there were other pu's in the guitar, the hot and ground are determined by whichever way you wire it and it turns out to be in phase with the other pickups.
