Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

Uh, are you referring to heads + cabs?

If so, you please refer to my signature below ...

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

I play Thrash/Deathmetal with a Peavey XXX, and I love Eminence V12's.

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

Hiwatt DR201
Fender Bassman 100
Selmer T & B 50
AC-15 clone
I use a Peavey cab,, 4x12 with Jensens, I also have a 1x12 cab with my remaining Greenback 20 watts speaker.
Have two more of those, but they are dead for the moment.
Have one dead 30 watts greenback as well, that one is a must to return to life again, that is a great speaker.

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

I like Celestion 12's: G12H30 & Alnico Blue or Silver Bulldogs

I like Weber 10's: P10RT alnico & C10Q ceramic

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

celestion vintage 30. marshall heads. metal. :D

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

I play a wide range of musical styles from some country twang to heavy thrash metal. The speaker that delivers without adding color of its own is the Celestion Classic Lead 80. I used to have one 2x12 with the Lead 80's and another 2x12 with V30's. I found that I really don't care for the coloration of the V30 which breaks up earlier and adds a pronounced midrange boost. The Lead 80's work well with my VHT power amp and Randal & Egnater preamps.

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

I am mostly a blues player. I use a Marshall 900 which has 70 watt Celestions in it, and I also use a 60 Super Reverb which has Jensen 10's. They work well. I am currently searching to replace my 900 with a Plexi. Once I do this I will more than likley use the "greenbacks" with this vintage head! To me that is the best combination I have heard(for the Marshall sound). The Fender tone.... I think Jensens sound best. Tight and bright thats what I like

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

Well I guess my Celestion Greenbacks (25wt) would be my favorite. I've used them for Hard Rock and Blues mostly.

I used to have a 4x12 Laney cab from the early 80's that had a Fane speaker similiar to the Greenback that was fantastic, close runner up but I have no model number.

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

I'm glad someone started this thread- I've been curious myself. I've heard that after replacing their speakers and the amp sounds way better.

If no one minds me piggybacking on your post, how does a speaker change affect your sound? I'm looking for something that is very responsive to dynamics, and will give me a super clean sound, but allow it to growl (not crunch) on the dirty channel. I looove the way my amp sounds and it does do these things for me, but if it can sound better I'm all for it! In particular, I've read reviews of my amp (see signature), and someone said that a speaker replacement was all they needed to turn a good amp into an awesome tone monster.

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

I can play just about anything and everything. My gear needs to reflect that.

With that said, my favorite speakers are 50w doped ceramic Weber Blue Dogs and Silver Bells. It blows away any Celestion I've used. It truly handles it all, chimey cleans, bluesy overdrive, Marshall crunch, Mesa high gain, Bogner lead.

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

which is the best for crunch?, the best for clean?, an a versdatile speaker?

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

The speaker that delivers without adding color of its own is the Celestion Classic Lead 80.

I agree, that's what I use with my Marshall. I also like the old K series JBLs a lot, especially in Fenders.

Re: Which is your favorite speaker?

For clean, I'm a big fan of the JBL Orangeback (D120F, I think) that are in my '75 Twin Reverb.

For just about everything, I think the Celestion Vintage 30's are a good choice. The styles I play range from very clean sounds with compression, delay, etc., up to moderately overdriven (TS-9, etc.) and raunchy (Mesa lead channel) distortions. But not metal.

Other speakers I've tried are

1) EVM-12L (200W, very tight response, very efficient, but in no way could they be referred to as "warm" - brittle is more like it). Good if your main goal is power capacity, and if you want clean that stays clean all the way up.

2) Jensen C12N. Can't say much about them. I have one in a large 1x12" cabinet now. Tried it out in a Mesa Maverick, and it was not as warm as the Vintage 30, but sounded warmer than the stock Celestion 90W (Black Shadow) that came in the amp.

3) Celestion 90W (Black Shadow). Mesa puts these in a lot of their amps, and now that I've tried other speakers, I must say that I am not really impressed with this speaker. Guessing it's preferred for power handling, but it isn't that impressive.
