Which Marshall was used on this Roth Record

I have been listening to David Lee Roths solo cd A Little Ain't Enough... forgot i had this one!!! Bought it for a $1 at a pawn shop a few years ago and lost it..... Found it and the Tone that Jason Becker gets is great!!! Bob Rock behind the boards on this one.. There is a rythym guitarist as well.... I figure this has to be a Marshall amp of some sort on this album, what did Becker use at that time?

And could my early 80's JCM 800 head 2400 be made to sound like this? I have not fixed up my 800 yet so i have not cranked it..... I was playing thru it today a bit with the volume on 2..... Mine has been gain boosted and is noisey..... I'm hoping my 800 can sound like this oneday after a good service job...

No, it's definately Jason Becker, not Steve Vai. I reckon a modded JCM 800 will get those tones no problem.

Re: Which Marshall was used on this Roth Record

Vai and Sheehan both left after Skyscraper. Vai went to Whitesnake and Sheehan started Mr. Big with Paul Gilbert.

As for the amp, not sure but either a modded 800 or a good amount of rack gear, or both.

Re: Which Marshall was used on this Roth Record

Had this cd cranked on the way to a jam tonight! When i got to the jam i had my MIM Tele and a Peavey C30 with me.... After listening to the Roth cd i was wishing i had my 5150 and one of my Jacksons!!!!

The only downside is i'm going to have to find a way to use my JCM 800 with some volume somewhere! That 50 watt head is loud!!!!!!

:)

When i hear albums like this it makes me want to sell off a bunch of my guitars and build a new custom super strat.... Warmoth stuff, Floyd, Basswood body, Maple neck, so on.... and sell some of my amps and get something closer to this sound and set up..

As i said my 800 head is an early 80's Canadian issue head... Do the late 80's channel switching models have more gain?

ps-When i was using my 800 head for the first time in a long time today my volume knob was real sticky.. it was stuck on 3.... Do pots seeze up?

Re: Which Marshall was used on this Roth Record

I remember reading an interview with Jason Becker when the album came out and he talked about using a JCM900 head for most of the parts.

Re: Which Marshall was used on this Roth Record

My modded jcm 800 gets close to it. But it sounds to me like a jcm 800 and an overdrive. The sound is a little looser like what my sd-1 does to my 800.
I stand corrected about Vai.

a 900 eh...... hm interesting....

Re: Which Marshall was used on this Roth Record

The JCM900 MkIII's and Dual Reverbs from 1990-1992-93ish are steller amps. EL34 loaded and have the tone. Unfortunately, the MkIII's lasted only 2 years (they morphed in to he MkIV Master Volume - SL-X, another good one) and then the switch to 5881's came in to play which greatly affected their reputation IMO.

WhoFan, the split channel 800's early and late 80's had more gain on tap than the 2203/2204 amps. The major difference was the clipping diodes in the pre-amp of the split channels.

Thanks for the tip and i will keep my eyes open for some of those 900's and the later channel switching 800's... my early 800 2204 has been gain boosted and i think if i can turn it up loud enough it may do that sound well... only if i can get my tech to get the extra noise and hum under controll... The noise is like i have a Tube Screamer on in front of the amp at all times when i turn the gain up...

Uli Jon Roth kicks David Lee Roth's ass.

No problem. I absolutely love my MkIII and will never part with it. If the money situation was right for us right now, I would've snagged a 50 watter already so I'd have a 2100 and 2500. I've seen a few on eBay this past week, and still going for decent prices.

What does that have to do with anything?? Of course uli can kcik his ass on guitar...DLR doesnt play!

Re: Which Marshall was used on this Roth Record

DLR does play, albeit not much. He's the one on the acoustic guitar in "Ice Cream Man" on Van Halen (I).

and for the record, DLR pwns UJR.

Re: Which Marshall was used on this Roth Record

Been trying to get this sound with the equipment i already own, at a lower volume.... and i can come close with a few things.... A Little Ain't Enough has a hell of a lot of bottom end to it... Quite Crunchy... My 5150 does not have quite the edge that this tune has but it's close.... My jcm 800 head is too noisey and needs repairs.. But i found something cool that comes close...

2 years ago for $20 at a garage sale i bought a 1989 Roland GP8 rack FX unit...... I dusted off my Peavey Classic 50 head and plugged the GP8 infront of it... With the Distortion and the extra deep EQ controlls on the GP8 i can get really close to this album's sounds. In my bed room i'm only using my 1x12 Marshall 1912 cab...my 5150 cab is in the basement and i'm sure it would be even closer to that sound thru that 4x12.... Saddly i have no room in my bedroom for the 4x12 so it has sat for 2 years in the basement un-used.... i'll have to clean it up and get it in my room somehow! I have not used it since my band folded 2 years ago.... A little delay and NR helps sound closer to the album as well...
