I'm awaiting a Dell Inspiron 1525, that will be the heart of my first DAW. I'm looking for a pair of good microphones that would be used for stereo recording everything from acoustic\electric guitars to drums and ambience.

I found an used pair of Shure SM57's at a local advertising site... are these any good?

sm57's are you rbest bet, but make sure theyre geniune, there are soooo many fakes out there. I got burned recently, I have a thread on this forum somewhere about it. I did eventually get my money back.

You can't go wrong with an SM57 for recording guitar, though I'd also look at an Audio Technica AT2020 as a solid and budget-friendly choice.

Everyone who wants to record should have a dynamic mic (like the 57) and a medium or large diaphragm condenser as well. Those two mics will cover a lot of ground.

Re: Which microphones for laptop studio?

The SM57 is an industry standard. It's hard to go someplace and not find them. They are rugged and work well on electric guitar and drums. For acoustic guitar and micing anything from a distance...not as good but you can certainly get useable results. If you are just starting out learning recording a pair of 57's would not be a bad thing especially if you can get them cheap. What you are recording is more important than how you are recording it. A 5000 dollar mic won't make a bad performance sound good!

I'll see if those SM57's are still for sale, then :)
