Which modern LP Type?

Hi All

Im looking to buy a mobern LP type guitar and cant decide!

They are all a similar price with which semingly looks like similar quality hardware, all Korean made etc.
Pickup wise eventually I'll probably it a vintage 1960 LP type (Seymours, Barfuss, WCR or Bare Knuckle) for that vintage Clapton, Allman, Bloomfield type tone.

Anyone got any thoughts?

I would suggest adding the LTD LP styles or an Epiphone to your list for consideration. At least with the Epi, the construction will be fairly similar. Once you swap out the electronics, you should be just about as close as you can get.

Ive had a really good look at the Epis and canpick one up cheaper than the others but Im looking for something with a more modern look to it.

+1 on randomonium's post. The Michael Kelly in the trading post is serious business. We're all either poor or corksniffy so its still there.

I selected the PRS SE of those listed. However, I WOULD have selected ESP/LTD if it were there.

Epiphone tribute. Full thickness maple cap. No need to swap electronics.

Out of what you listed I would go with the PRS or Chapman but check these out.

It's going to be up to the control layout that you like best. I've had (my son still has it) a Michael Kelly and I had a PRS SE with the trem. I don't like PRS' one piece stoptail with no adjustability. They were both great for the money. Pretty equal in terms of quality, although I liked the MK a lot better. LTD's are nice too, I just don't like the 12th fret inlay, it looks cheesy to me. Have you checked out the DBZ Bolero's?

Before spending that kind of money on a new Korean LP type, I'd get a used "real" Les Paul made in Japan. Orville, Orville by Gibson, JDM Epiphone, or Epiphone Elistist. They were made better than what Gibson turns out these days, and they are worth every penny, and then some. All of them but the Elitist line have the open book headstock, and they all have the "correct" Gibson shapes. The only reason I sold my MIJ Epi '61 reissue SG is because I'm downsizing, and I already have a '68 Standard. Even though the two guitars were redundant, it was extremely painful to sell the Epi, as it was as good as or better than the '68. I only did it because the '68 is a lifer, and a friend who I trust implicitly bought the Epi, so at least it's still in the family. I didn't get 1/3 of what the guitar felt like it was worth. I also had an early Elite (the original, and short-lived, name of the Elitist series), which was the same exact guitar but with a different headstock and slightly better electronics, but it was stolen.

I have looked at at Japanese LP's. I liked the Burny RLG-60 SL model for its vintage vibe. Orvilles can be a bit pricey this side of the pond. There a nice Elite on fleabay at the mo: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EPIPHONE-...al_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item4acf1894de

Have you looked at the Epiphone Matt Heafy Signature? Sure the EMG's might not be the best, but it might be worthwhile to check one out. You might be looking at a pickup upgrade with any of those options anyways.

Other than that, I'd say the PRS because their quality seems to be really consistent and not having played the certain specimen of the Michael Kelly or Chapman you are looking at, I couldn't really say otherwise.

The ones I played were spot on for intonation. Also I take back what I said about the Chapman model I would go either PRS or the Electra Omega I posted. The vol knob placement is very important to me in that it is reachable with my pinky.

I was going to say the Chapman but its probably a bit too modern for what you're looking for, especially since it has a 25" scale and no maple cap. From the ones provided the SE 245 is the closest, but I'd almost immediately take an ESP/LTD EC-400-series guitar. Full-thickness mahogany body with maple cap, and they come already fitted with duncans/dimarzios(the 2014 ones have PAF 36th Neck and Bridge models instead of the JB and '59). They are more expensive than the ones mentioned but I say they're worth the extra cost. And personally I think the Lemon Drop finish on the new EC-401 is delicious, just look at it:
