I have a Carvin Legacy. It has some major balls but I wouldn't call it a "high gain" chugga chugga amp. It's modeled after a bogner extacy which is modeled after a marshall plexi. I like mine a whole lot though. It's really thick and fat. And it probably has one of the best clean channels of any amp on the market.

NOBODY mentioned the 5150, and that's one of the best amps out there for high gain. It's discontinued now too so you can get one real cheap from musicians friend. The peavey 6505 will replace it too which is essentially the same amp anyway.

Hughes and Kettner Duotone is a great amp too if you have the money.

I'd say Soldano Avenger, an SLO without all the fancy stuff, pure tube tone, simple signal path and probably the best build quality of all the brands mentioned. Besides, almost all "modern" high gain amps are a copy of the SLO 100 in some way.

I've played out of Mesa Dual Rectifier, Peavey XXX, Zinky Mofo, Soldano HR 50+. Loved the Soldano's gain the best. Went home with a Zinky Mofo, best cleans, more versatile with clean, classic rock to heavy channel and heavy to insane gain channel, priced right, best customer service by the guy himself. Does metal with a different voice than the PV and Mesa, which sound similar to me. I didn't care so much for the PV. Something sort of generic about it, I think. Out of your list for me, Soldano. Since you already have one, something else so you can play in stereo and get that thick, layered tone.

I haven't tried that particular Soldano, but I do like SLO100. I voted "other".

The XXX is nice, a little jangly/bright though. Kinda harsh at times. The Modellers from Line 6 are just not my thing. Carvin's sound cool on the clips I've heard but have not played through one.

I just got a MESA F-50 today, and it's a phenomenal high gain amp, and I do believe it comes in a head config in the same price range you are looking for.

And I'd also look into VHT: One of these days I will have one LOVE thier sound. But they are HIGH $.

Don't forget looking into a modded Marshall..800 series, Plexi reissue, etc, either.

Use a Smokey Amp as an FX box and run it into a chain saw miced to a 4X15 PA cabinet. That ought to do you in the high gain dept.

of the choices XXX hands down!! as for the lynch thing...here is what i was told about it...peavey first made the Ultra Plus (which i own and LOVE!!!) which was supposedly going to be a Lynch signature model but then he wanted something a bit different so they canned the Ultra Plus and replaced it with the XXX which was also supposed to be a Lynch sig model but again he decided to go another route. I just think Lynch is pickey lol (aren't we all) i wouldn't care much if it has his name on it or not, it is a killer amp for sure for high gain! I love my ultra plus and play through Mesa's now and again at the studio but if i was going to buy a new amp it would be a XXX....unless i win lotto and can get a diesel hehehe

I absolutely love George Lynch, but have you heard his newer stuff? thats not a desirable tone to me at all. The Lynch/Pilson record while good has some real generic NU metally type tones on it and the last Lynch mob record was god awful tonewise. If you go from a Soldano to a Peavey XXX you'll end up shooting yourself in under 30 days,, LOL.

I would prefer a Bogner Ecstasy 101B, a Soldano SLO100, or a Jeff Seal-modded Marshall.

Thanks for the input, Bros... I had the Soldano tweaked by Dan Torres (Torres Engineering San Mateo, CA) for more gain. The lil' sucker COOKS now! I'm not sure what transistor voodoo Dan did under the hood, but I'm pretty happy with it. He added a lot more spank and dirt to it. Kinda like the original tone, but with the loudness button pushed in.

I was originally unhappy because I had to use an overdrive pedal (Tech 21's XXL) to achieve those coveted Hi-Gain scream-type tones. I slowly realized that my tone isn't really all that distorted. More CRUNCH than SCREAM. I wouldn't dare get rid of my Soldano now!

Avenger IF it uses the DeYoung transformers.

I've played an SLO-100 since 1991. Incredible amp. The transformers are one big reason why none of the other Soldanos capture the same tone. Check out my soundpage clips with All The King's Men to hear it.

Otherwise, I might check out a Bogner Shiva.


BTW, I'd ditch the Tech 21 and check into something like a Lovepedal or Soldano Supercharger depending on what type of boost you want.

if a brand came to my mind it could be Peavey... i have a XXL the solid state version of the XXX and man!!! it rocks, it came through in my last recording, nice rythm tone and the solo oh my god!!! i´m not fantasing with it i wish i cuold affort a XXX but anyways, since you mentioned that you dont like Mesa, try the Mode Four from Marshall it has many different sounds... also the carvin rocks, but is just my humble opinion...

As funny as that splawn of yours looks- I've heard clips of em and they sound quite good indeed. As for the peavey's- I liked the xxx when I tried it but I think the jsx looks a little better overall. Be sure to lets us know what you end up with- I'll be in the market soonish myself.
