Would you people help me to decide which one and care to explain why? They both use the same PUPs, but beside that, they seem pretty different in construction and style.
Aestetically, I really like them both. I play classic/alternative/hard rock.
I really need some help since I don't know what kind of quality to expect from these manufacturers. Thanks to all those willing to help.

You really need to go try (at least) similar guitars as these are COMPLETELY different animals in feel, and I guarantee you will gravitate to one over the other after trying both.

Re: Which one of these two guitars and why?

They're both insanely different. Are you sure of what you want?

I could understand if you were stuck between finishes

but these only share humbuckers and a fixed bridge.

Re: Which one of these two guitars and why?

If it were me I would prefer the shorter scale of the LTD
For bar chords and chugging

But I just got my first Les Paul and the shorter scale makes it much easier to play

Yes I understand that they are quite different beasts. I am sure I like the pickup combinations, and I want it with fixed bridge. But here where I live there's no way I could try them both.. I own a strat and a LP and I feel confortable playing both actually, that's why I am considering both. I imagine one other big thing to consider is that the ESP is a 24 frets guitar. I own nothing like that at the moment.

Yeah, sorry I cant be much help here because the previous 2 posts are right on. The are both great guitars, but they are very different in shape feel and everything. Either one would be usable for the music styles you mentioned.. I'll try to give you some guidance.. What do you play now?

I have a couple of Charvels and have some guitars in a similar vein to the LTD.

First, the difference in feel of the two guitars.. The charvel has a 25.5 scale neck. So if you like the feel of Fender strat, this will play like that and have a bit more snap to the tone and string tension. The LTD is 24.75 scale like a les paul. The tension under the fingers will be alittle easier and the tone will be slightly darker with more "bark"

As said before, this is hard to advise you on as they are so different. Some people prefer the feel of one type vs the other. So its really going to be what you prefer. Both are good choices..

Re: Which one of these two guitars and why?

Both are great guitars made by reputable brands. I prefer Strats and the typical Fender Scale so I would choose the Charvel BUT you are the one buying a guitar, what do you prefer. As mention, try out these guitars (or as close as you can to each) and see which one you like better.

Thank you for your effort; as I wrote while you were replying, I own both a Strat and a LP. I like playing 'em both. The main difference I see with the models I own, is that it seems I can get constatly better clean tones from the Strat, while the LP has got so beautfiful distorted sounds. If I have to think carefully, I would dare to say that the LP neck feels faster according to my playing style. Could it be?

Re: Which one of these two guitars and why?

I think you should buy a Telecaster.

But maybe that's because I just bought my first Tele and am rather smitten with it. Seriously though, as stated above, go play both. That will help your decision more than asking people here.

Re: Which one of these two guitars and why?

The ESP, but everyone else is right, you have to try them out. Very different guitars.

Re: Which one of these two guitars and why?

Buy both, only sensible option really,
but at that price range I'd get one of these (ESP Edwards E-LP-130ALC)

e-lp-130alc_bk_all.jpg

And/or a US strat (H/S/S if you must) then you have a larger pallete of tones, of course then you need to start saving for a tele,

Re: Which one of these two guitars and why?

It would be good to get John Jolly in to comment on this. Notorious LP slinger gone over to the Charvel camp.

For myself, I don't dig the white pickups in blueburst surroundings. I also have something of a downer on photoflame tops.

What really matters, of course, is how the necks feel in your hands and how you like to work the controls. The twin volume pots of the LTD permit tonal colours that the Charvel cannot possibly match.

With a fancy five-way superswitch circuit, the Charvel could yield five useful sounds. The LTD would require push-pull pots or a Freeway 3x3-03 toggle.

Re: Which one of these two guitars and why?

Also keep in mind that other than the scale length and bridge, that LTD does NOT feel like a Les Paul. Necks are much thinner (shred!) and the body is much thinner as well with different curvature.

You really need to try it.

I really wish I could.. Sigh

Man,I wish I'd known about Edwards when I bought my Epi "Sykes"...

I've never played an Edwards but I own a tokai es130 (335) and played a couple of japanese tokai LP's they are at least as good as Gibsons.
Edwards are reportedly of similar quality, there's a nice Edwards Jimmy Page LP I've been eying if I didn't already own a gibson LP I'd buy one in a heartbeat
