Boss SD1 Super Overdrive Pedal VS Digitech Bad Monkey.

Lets go with prices...

Boss SD1 Super Overdrive Pedal: List Price: $119.00 (140€ after taxes around here)

DigiTech Bad Monkey Tube Overdrive Pedal: List: $59.95 (70/75€ after taxes around here)

Normally I wouldn't buy the Boss... I have no idea how any of them sound and despite the fact Boss is... well, Boss, the BM does seem to be able to do more (two tone knobs). The larger price tag also weighs heavilly in my opinion.

The thing is, I might be able to get an Boss for 40€ (add some more $ for shipping but maybe its a good deal even if it matches the price of the BM tough a new one would have warranty). The source is reliable and I trust him so thats not a problem. Then again it's second hand and I don't know if it's wise to buy second hand pedals.

Is it worth it? I wouln't mind paying the 75€ for the BM because in my head, more knobs, more ability to taylor the sound.

Also, don't forget I have zero experience with pedals, own only one guitar (Fender Cyclone) and my amp is a cheap practice solid state EKO K-100 (eventually to be replaced with a Fender Blues or Pro Jr - I don't need anything bigger).

So, taking all of this into account... what do you think is best for me? Bear in mind I'm thinking in the long run, don't look at just the current amp. I just want something to give me some extra push, the OD on my amp sucks right now (naturally) and I also want something to give me some versatility eventually.

*if you can't see the poll, gimme a few*

With a solid state amp, an overdrive pedal just adds a little crunch to a clean sound, and is best mixed with a little amp distortion for satisfying heavy distortion tones. I have about 25 overdrives and distortions, and I feel the TS9DX Tube Screamer sound kind of uninteresting with a solid state amp, but it sounds magical with a toob amp. I don't have a Bad Monkey, but the SD-1 sounds pretty cool with a solid state amp, but it still doesn't give heavy distortions unless mixed with amp distortion. My main recommendation is to wait until you get a toob amp before getting an overdrive, but looking for various blends of solid state pedal distortion and solids state amp distortion can be fun also. It also depends on which sound you are looking for. There are a few straight-ahead distortion pedals which sound cool with both tube and solid state amps. I'm voting for the SD-1.

I'm a big fan of boss pedals (although I've heard many good reviews of the BM) . . . so I'd probably go with whichever pedal is cheaper. I've purchased 9 or 10 Boss pedals used and haven't had any huge problems with them. They're built to last pretty well, so I wouldn't worry about buying used.

The SS amp is for now, as I'm getting the Fender when I get some more cash to be comfortable.
Part of me is paying attention to the highlighted part. Most of this is just cause I know Boss has a good rep and I doubt I'll find a similar deal ever again. If I lose it now I'm going for the BM.

In all counts that makes you pro Boss, if I read you correctly. :)

Eheh. Toob... Eheh :beerchug:

Thanks, folks.

Can anyone tell me if they have experience with both pedals? That would be interresting. Pierre? IIRC didn't you have them?

Nothing against the Bad Monkey, as I've read many positive comment about it, but...

In the long run, the Boss is a good investment. They last forever. They sound pretty good stock. There's a large pool of mods and modding advice for them. And if all else fails, they hold their resale value pretty well.

Look for a lightly used one. I just bought one last week from FGWIF, and I love it.

I am getting it used (if going through with it) ;) 40€, plus some shipping costs.

Since when does the SD-1 cost 140€ or the BM cost 75€? Where in hell are you right now?
Ordering from thomann the SD-1 is 60€ and the BM is 40 i think.

I'd personally go for the SD-1 and get it modded. A modded SD-1 is my favorite OD ever.

Re: Which one should I get? (read post first)

I'd just buy a DS-1.

You said your distortion on the amp sucks and you want something you'll be able to use later on. So DS-1 it is.

Prices were taken from MF and I took the list price cause I'd be ordering from one of two Mom and Pop stores so no discount prices. Add to that 21% tax and you got my stated prices. I'm in Portugal... it does look like Hell some times LOL

Turns out it's already modded.

I'd just buy a DS-1.

Guess the Monkey stands no chance.

I'll post again if I get it.

Thanks, folks.

Re: Which one should I get? (read post first)

Why not oder from thomann if you want the SD-1, they ship anywhere in europe and they have some of the best service and prices

Re: Which one should I get? (read post first)

Cause I don't trust companies. Most of them ask for the credit card and I don't even have one. Not to mention I've never even heard of this Thomann (you're probably gonna tell me it's one of the biggest dealers or something now, eheh, thus proving how out of the loop I am).

I trust the person I'm getting it from and besides it has already been modded. After hearing the before and after clips... I think I wouldn't settle with the stock when I could have the modded version and finding someone savyy enough to mod it for me would require shiping it from here to wherever such a person lives, having it modded (if it was done in Portugal it would take a while for parts to arrive) and then having it shipped back to me. I can see the end price being higher than if I went through with this deal. :(

In the end if I was to get a store bought one I'd go with the BM. As prices go, new, I don't think you can beat that.

Might check out Thomann tough, someday I might lose my paranoia.

Thanks.
