which PATB?

so ive got a super distortion in my carvin and i was thinking of getting one of the parallel axis buckers. i heard blues saracenos sound and it seems like a pretty fat sound i really like his tone on songs like "chewing on crayons." the problem is, idk wat guitar he is using. my carvin is a really bright guitar. (alder body, birdseye maple board, neck thru, OFR) would the blues saraceno fatten the sound up? the super distortion is pretty fat souding for me right now, but i dont really like it, a bit muddy not too much character. im kinda lookin for a fat paf sound than can do modern tones as well. the tone in "chewing on crayons" would actually be really nice for waht i want.

i was also thinking about the PA distortion. but that thing is 21.3k???? that wouldnt relaly match with any duncan neck p'up would it? i was thinking of the a2p or pg in the neck, but those are like 7-8k, nowhere near 21.3. there would be a huge volume jump right?

Re: which PATB?

I dont think it would be a HUGE vol difference. I have an 8k neck bucker, and a 16k Bridge bucker.....they ALMOST match up volume wise (lowered the bridge a smidge and raised the neck)

Re: which PATB?

Even at 21K the PA Distortion has what I would consider to be a much softer magnetic field. So it's kind of like when Dimarzio overwinds a pickup but makes it an "airbucker" the output doesn't correlate directly to the resistance.

Output aside, based on the complaints you have about the Super D, I think the PA Distortion is definitely the wrong pickup for you. You would probably have some of the same complaints. The PA Blues sounds like a great choice, even better than the original PA. Otherwise in classic pickup designs, you should probably be looking at one of the Alnico Custom models.

Re: which PATB?

Hey "joisey"-I'd go with the patb-3 blues saraceno.i've tried the patb-1 also.it's a great pup too,but at 15.7k it's a little more compressed than i like.compared to the patb-3,the patb-1 has a pinch less bass,a smidge more mids and a hair less on the treble-so it's a little thicker & darker, but just a tad.the patb-3 is & will permanently stay in my bright guitar, which is a '91 ibanez rg565-basswood body & all-maple neck/fretboard.it's that good.do a search on some of the previous threads related to the parallel axis pups or the patb-3 specifically.the blues saraceno's got that great open tone, yet overwound just enough to get a crunchy, yet still smooth tone with a great low-mids growl thing goin(kinda like the demon pup)...does anything from blues to rock to metal-no problem!!!
