Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

The story so far:

1. The good.

L.P Std '96J.P Brobucker/PGn c/w RSGuitarworks vintage rewire - this one is sorted just need to get some PU foam under the pups to try to reduce high pitch feedback. The RS kit is awesome, really cleans up the dirtiest sound without loss of tone!

L.P '57 B.B - Burstbuckers I think?? I really love the sound but keep thinking what if? For now it's cool, if it ain't broke don't fix it - but when I do I'll get the RS kit too.

L.P DC pro - Gibson P90's, sound fine to me though I don't have any real ref points.

G&L ASAT Classic - stock MFD's in there which I really like, doubt if I'll change these out though I'll ask for recommendations from you guys at some point.

2. Half way there.

USA Wolf - Custom in the bridge is great, still got the peavey neck in and don't know what to change it out for 'coz the Peavey SUCKS!

3. Need sorting.

G&L Legacy std - Hotrail bridge and G&L neck and middle. Just looking for a HSS plate for this one, got a '78 to drop in, want to get Antiquity surfers for the middle and neck, again I'll ask what the guys in the know think of this combo.

4. Not sure'

G&L Legacy special. Mint and standard, but may sell this guitar as I rarely use it, beautiful Blueburst with thick, dark rosewood board. This guitar sounds huge, not very strat like 'coz of the dual blade pick ups I guess. Strangely it's the ONLY guitar I've ever heard that sounds even BIGGER than my '57 B.B.??

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

'90 Fender MIJ Fender '62 RI Strat - Twangbanger + SSL1s
'91 Gibson Les Paul Classic - Pearly Gates neck & bridge
'96 Gibson Les Paul Standard - Bare Knuckle Mules neck & bridge

They all work perfectly for my classic rock / bluesy rock / blues style.

The only reason I continue to tinker is that there are so many pickups to try and I just can't afford more guitars to put them in. I need another LP to host my Custom / Jazz combo!

The Brobucker/PG is a great LP set. I think the Brobucker wasn't potted, so as soon as I heard the squealing nickel cover, I potted mine. Now it can handle gain and volume with no problem.

I'm pretty sure your Black Beauty has 57 Classics in it. They're some of my favorites from Gibson. Any Gibson I've had that came with them...I just left them in. They'll probably stay in my new 335. An SG I once had sounded good with them too.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

I haven't had chance to chop and change at will, but I don't see myself ever swapping the Twangbanger/SSL-1/SSL-1 combo in my Legacy.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

The Twangbanger bridge with SSL-1s middle and neck is a GREAT versatile combo in an SSS Strat-style guitar. Punchy Tele-ish bridge side-by-side with vintage Strat middle and neck. There's a lot you can do with that.

The SSL-1 Stevie took out of his Legacy to put his Twangbanger in is in the neck position of my Strat :approve:

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

The jazz set in my schecter has been the only thing I've tried so far that's been versatile enough to completely satisfy me. Most other stuff has sounded good but it's over the top in a way that makes it not useable for certain sounds and makes me want more guitars. The jazz set does pretty much everything well enough to satisfy me.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

LP Standard with SD 59's, the neck has an A2 mag but they work so well together. My fave guitar and my fave pups, I can't beat it.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

In my Jackson DXMg w/ Floyd, the Jazz set is perfect. Also, mostly any Duncan Strat set Ive put together fro Strat builds is golden. Other mixed sets, however, trying to complete a parts guitar, are more "iffy".The Brobucker in the bridge of my 80 SG is perfect, but i have it paired with a faboulous vintage Gibson T-top neck pickup.

Im happy with most of mine. I have two that Im 150% happy with.
My Epi LP with a Genesis Sounds PAF in the neck and a Genesis Sounds Blues in the bridge. Its perfect..

Also, my 80s Kramer Pacer Imperial which came stock with Duncan Jazz neck and JB bridge.

Im pretty certain these will stay as is too:

My Japanese Squier strat is loaded with Bill Lawrence Keystones.

My Squier VintageModified Tele has a ton of great tones from the GFS mini firebird pickup in the neck, stock Duncan designed in the middle and Duncan Jerry Donahue in the bridge.

My 06 Gibson LP studio has tones so warm I can heat up a meal while I play.
Genesis sounds Mr Browney in the bridge and Duncan Alnico II Pro in the neck.

My Michael Kelly Patriot Custom has a stock Rockfield pickup in the neck (suprisingly good stock pup) and a custom RIO BBQ in the bridge. Both are tapped for extra sounds and the guitar is Wired out of phase so I get a great wah sound with the selector in the middle.

My 1987 Kramer Focus 6000 with a Dimarzio Fast Track 2 in the neck and middle and Duncan Custom 8 in the bridge.

My Schecter C1 Artist came stock with Duncan 59 neck and JB bridge.

My 88 Charvel model 4 has a Crazy 8 in the bridge

My other 07 Epi LP has BBQ in the bridge and Duncan ALnico II pro in the neck

04 Explorer with 59b in the neck, Custom in the bridge

96 Strat with Blue Lace sensor in the neck, Silver in the middle and Duncan C5 in the bridge.

1997 Washburn Steve Salas with Duncan JB in the bridge and Cool rails neck and middle.

1995 Washburn MG100 with Duncan SC1 (?) neck and middle and JB in the bridge.

1995 Washburn mercury with Duncan 59 neck and C5 bridge.

1990 Ibanez RG570 with Duncan 59b in the neck, Dimazio VV Blues in the middle and Duncan C5 in the bridge.

2007 Ibanez RG550 With Dimarzio Breed in the bridge, stock middle and Dimarzio PAF Pro neck.

Others are iffy

Definate changes planned are;
My 87 Charvel 4 will be getting a PATB3

My 80s Burney LP Custom clone will be getting something to replace the Zakk Wylde EMG set.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

70s Ibanez Custom Agent, stock PAF style pickups, Super 70s I believe.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

EMG 85 in the bridge of my C-1 Stealth (Mahogany w/TOM/string thru).

admit it, that 81 will wind up back in that bridge eventually :laugh2:

seriously though.....
the d sonic in the bridge of my RG.... i talka bout changing it out but i doubt i ever will, i like how it feels/sounds.
I play metal with that axe.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Bridge - WCR Goodwood Bridge in Pacifica, 500k pots (Alder with Ash top)

3 Way - Series / Parallel / Mute

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Tokai Strat ('82) with BareKnuckle Apache set, 300k pots, Callaham bridge.

....leaves the 5 *F* Strat's i've owned looking like pale imitations.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

I have a few with set ups that are as close to perfect as i can see in that guitar.
My stock 1999 Washburn USA WM4. Swamp ash body with a Quilt Maple cap, mahogany neck, rosewood board. The pickups Custom Custom/59.
AMAZING thick traditional Les Paul type tones on steroids. This one will flat mop the floor with ANY Les paul I have ever owned or played in tones and playability. Simply PERFECTION!!!
DSC00462.jpg

My 1994 one off Washburn Prototype. Maple neck and board, Honduras Mahogany with a Quilt Top body. the pickups EMG's 85 in the bridge and a H60A in the neck. Solid fat warm sweet raw TONE. This one is just astounding and is ULTRA versitile and just sounds GREAT clean or crunched. I can cover from metal to country to jazz with this guitar. To bad it was a unique one off shop toy handbuild by Grover Jackson. It's the perfect overall stage guitar and Washburn really should have produced these!!
DSC00294.jpg

My 1995 USA Custom Washburn MG 100. Swamp ash body. now with a Crazy 8 and a pair of Dimarzio Blue Velvets.
High tec metal MONSTER solo tones from the Crazy 8 but well ballanced tapped with the singles and sweet killer cleans!! GREAT stage guitar that cuts well through the mix!!
DSC00275.jpg

My 1995 Swamp Ash boddied USA Washburn MG 102. A-8 Custom 59.
Bright and tight with a solid bottom just a KILLER for hot modern metal and rock soloing with additude!

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

The one guitar that I haven't changed in ages is my 92 MIM Standard Tele with an EMG 85n/81b combo. I have ideas for it, but I just haven't changed anything in probably 6 years.

I like the stock tone of my PL1770. It's in pieces right now being cleaned, but it's a very focused and classic-but-bordering-on-modern tone that works well with my amp.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

gibson explorer w/ JB in the bridge & 300k vol. pots
-sounds the absolute best through all amps/modelers/whatever. not entirely content with the neck pickup, but i can almost guarantee that the JB is never leaving this guitar

LTD ex-351 w/ DD/'59
-the DD isnt as thick as the explorer's JB, but its more tight and cutting. this is my #2 guitar. and the '59 is great.

LTD alexi-600 w/ neck model blackout in bridge pos.
-really beefed up this otherwise very very bright guitar

I'm quite happy with the Bill Lawrence Keystones in my MIA Peavey strat.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

100% satisfied? I dunno...everything is subject to change if something better comes along. And then, wouldn't that mean I wasn't 100% satisfied after all?

That said:

#1 Stratocaster: two Antiquity Surfers and Antiquity Texas Hot Custom bridge
#2 Stratocaster: two Antiquity Surfers and Duncan Custom Shop Tele Hot
#3 Stratocaster: Pearly Gates neck and Duncan Custom bridge

#1 Telecaster: Joe Barden Tele pickups
#2 Telecaster: Antiquity I (alnico 2) pickup set
#3 Telecaster: Duncan Custom Shop "Tele ala Strat" neck and CS A2 Tele Hot bridge

#1: G&L SC-3: Joe Barden Strat pickups

#1 Les Paul: only have one and it has old Tom Holmes double cream HB's

I don't plan to ever change the pickups in any of those guitars again...but you never know.

Re: Which pickup/guitar combos are you 100% satisfied with?

Black Sheraton with a C5 & '59N. 250K's on the bridge, 500K's on the neck, and the 4-push-pull Jimmy Page system. Hard to beat that.
