For fuzz I like the SSL-1 and the STK-S4 from Duncan. Basically I really like how vintage spec or close to vintage spec single coils and stacked single coils sound with fuzz.
Occasionally I can dig a low output humbucker with fuzz depending on the style of music/playing. Usually it's a coil split humbucker that sounds best with fuzz if we are talking humbuckers though IMO.
So far I liked bright pickups with lower output the best with fuzz. Seems to give me the best range of options when dialing in sounds with the volume and tone controls.
Yep. Vintage strat single coils. Anything resembling that kind of tone is golden. Tried a lot of hotter and warmer humbuckers with fuzz and it just never quite works out. Doesn't bite through it enough and loses a lot of definition. Gets farty etc. I prefer 69 coils with it. Though I'm sure most humbuckers split would do a great job, or even the full bucker if the fuzz is dialed back to a more subtle level for Cream tones and such.
I like noiseless single coils the best with Fuzz. I use the DiMarzio Area 61. Fuzz works fine with most Humbuckers too. You just back off the volume if it gets too messy. A lot of the time fuzz is gonna sound how it's gonna sound. Bright pickup? Dark Pickup? Who cares!
