Re: Which SD pup is most like the Guild S100 pups?

Those pickups are on the low output end of a PAF sort of thing; not sure about magnet type, but the dc resistance and tone are similar to 60's T-Tops...you can find them used if you scout around; a lot of people swapped them out for Gibson/whatever...

Howdy,

I'd suggest SD '59s. They're great in my old ES-335!

Eggman, thanks for the suggestion.

I had a '59n and it was not at all what I was looking for. I bet they sound nice and chimy in your ES-335!

Those Guild buckers are vintage output and alnico 5...when I was looking for replacements for a 74 S100 Seymour suggested Duncan 59's and in the FMIC rreissue S100's and Bluesbirds from the 90's Guild/FMIC even used Duncan 59's!

With the right amp and such you can get the old Soundgarden tone with 59's and then some!

Re: Which SD pup is most like the Guild S100 pups?

hmmm... I find that my current setup sounds more like Soundgarden, than when I had the '59. I just wasn't getting the tight bass response and right high-end cut with the '59. But I also changed all the preamp tubes after I switched, so I donno. But I'm pretty happy with the setup in my sig. I am pretty sure he was using a MESA Maverick for most of the sounds on Superunknown, which is very similar to my amp.

I just don't get that AlNiCo quality with my current setup, and the bridge pickup doesn't sound like Kim's. I think a '59 bridge would do the Kim thing... I might have to try it. :wizard:

In any case, Thanks the guy who invented fire! I owe you one! :thanks:

Re: Which SD pup is most like the Guild S100 pups?

After doing a little reasearch, I think the Jazz bridge would sound closest to the Guild pups...

Re: Which SD pup is most like the Guild S100 pups?

It's really not...Im tellin ya bro, the 59's sound so close to the pickups in my father 74 S100 it hurts...

Maybe jazz neck / '59 bridge? I say this not to argue, but because I really was turned off in my experience with a '59n. It could be the plywood my Epiphone SG is made out of! I donno.

Nope...the Jazz neck is far to toppy and articulate...the sound of those guitars are closest to 59's...if you can't get the Kim Thayil tone from a set of 59's in an SG style guitar or S100 style guitar the problem ain't the pickups!

Lots of big mesa's are ket as well, in the older days it was Music Mans and PV amps but by that time Mesa was king...however keep in mind there is a LOT of Telecaster on those recordings, a lot more than you might think!

Re: Which SD pup is most like the Guild S100 pups?

I can get some of the sounds on that CD! Like, My Wave, I have the lead channel dialed in for the power chords in that song right now! Black Hole Sun clean tone - flip it to Rhythm and crank up the output volume for some power tube distortion!

But some of it sounds like a 4x10 cab (the lower mid resonances), and some tones are real articulate (I suspect the telecaster might be what is misleading me to think that a Jazz bridge would get that certain tone.) I could talk soundgarden for days, but I'm off to pick up my girl!

Thanks man!
