Dear all,
I have a simple question : Which pickups set should I put on a MIJ Fender Stratocaster RI62 from 1987 ?
(with a rosewood neck)
I play blues, rock, garage.
I want a vintage sound and I don't really like the Texas sound, clearly.
Any ideas or experiences ?
Thanks !

Thanks a lot Mincer !
Is there a S.D. Pickup that You've never tried :-) ?
I'm also thinking about some Bare Knuckle stuff, I've a Mother Milk set which as a perfect sound with my other Strat (mapple fretboard)...

Lindy Fralin Vintage Hot Strat Pickups or ANTIQUITY II SURFER STRAT set.

I thought the Hot Strat set was a bit Texas sound, doesn't it ?

Among the bigger name makers, you absolutely can not beat the S.D. SSL-1 set for a proper "vintage Strat" sound at a great price point.

It's been said a thousand times, but Seymour knows his vintage single coils! Lots of guys that jump on the boutique train end up pulling back into the S.D./SSL-1 station at some point ;)

As Mincer mentioned, the next "step up" (not a giant leap, mind you, but some added nuance and expressiveness) would be the Antiquities, but the price is a step up, as well. That said, if you often play with much gain, the SSL-1 set might suit you better.

Just depends on what you're after and what your budget allows.

I have no maximum budget...
I'm thinking about the L series sound too
I mostly play clean sound, my other strat has Bare Knuckle Mother Milk.
My setup: DV Mark Galileo (head, Kinda Fender clean with big headroom), EHX soul food, Ibanez TS9, EHX satisfaction fuzz, an analog vintage delay and a Danelectro spring king Reverb.
I play garage rock blues mostly.

The irony is that Bare Knuckle called it the Mother's Milk, yet Frusciante uses SSL-1 pickups. :)

They would give you a nice compliment to the Mother's Milk. A little hotter and fatter, I'd estimate.

I didn't know it that !
So I won't take the same kind of pickup than my other strat...

Since you didn't specify manufacturer...

I highly recommend the Dimarzio Area set or the Dimarzio Virtual Vintage 54 Pros! They are dead silent while preserving a great classic chimey single coil tone. Other than lack of the annoying noise, I couldn't tell that they were noiseless single coil pickups.

They make several different ones in the Area series and you can mix and match them along with the Virtual Vintage 54 Pros

As soon as I saw the thread title I thought Surfers. SSL-1's if you want to save a little cash, but Surfers would definitely be what I would put in it.

Yeah I'm really thinking about Surfers now ! :-)
Or start doing my own pups ! I've too many ideas in my mind...
