Which Seymour Duncan Should I Go For Now?

Re: Which Seymour Duncan Should I Go For Now?

From the description on the page:

Now you can drop that twangy magic into any humbucker guitar with the Psyclone humbucker.

And..

The full-throated snap and twang of the classic Filter’Tron, in a direct-replacement humbucker size.

Thanks mate!
Well... my final options and I would like your opinions:
Pearly Gates, PAF Master, PAF 36th , SH-6 + SH-2 or the Psyclone. Planning to order today or this week. Psyclone are winning. Just would like to make sure it's the right choice because of the price tag.

Re: Which Seymour Duncan Should I Go For Now?

Well, the Psyclones would win on looks alone...certainly uniqueness, too.

Re: Which Seymour Duncan Should I Go For Now?

i believe the psyclone buckers only have one output option; 7.2k neck, 8.2k bridge

i think you are right.
and this is kind if odd. vintage filtertrons are around 4k !!! resistance.
and the pole distance from coil to coil is smaller than the duncan humbucker sized psyclones.
i doubt they have the classic filtertron sparkle and all.
i am no fan of those compromised pickups, but that’s me.

Thanks Jeremy for that info. They seem to be on low output PAF terrain. I wonder if they'll be strong enough for being coil splitted. I believe the guitar is already compromised being a PRS Starla with some Filtertronish meets humbuckers tone. Just would like to do a good (for life) upgrade. It's sad there's not much info about the Psyclone yet.

Re: Which Seymour Duncan Should I Go For Now?

Clear with power, that sounds like Screamin' Demon to me. And clearer than '59n? Jazz.

a regular filtertron has a bigger magnet than a paf-style pickup. i wouldn’t base any output conclusion on DCR, only.
and with this fullsized version we know nothing (yet)
does it have a filtertron sized magnet?
does it use AWG 42?
maybe it should replicate a vintage and not a hot filtertron, but it uses a thinner wire?

i would never split a vintage style filtertron by the way, they already sound a bit like a single coil or a paf style humbucker in parallel in regular filtertron (series) mode.

Re: Which Seymour Duncan Should I Go For Now?

i believe the psyclone does have a double thick a5 magnet

The Jazz has been on my list for this pickup change. The question would be the right bridge pickup.

It definitely could be a copy of the vintage sounding Filtertron-style Psyclone. I dig Alnico V Pickups.

The Psyclones were designed to, well, clone, that sound.

Well... I definitely went on a different path. Going to install a TB-6/Jazz combination on my PRS Starla. Planning on coil splitting the pickups, but I'm wondering if I should go for a mini switch too for parallel/series sounds or any other fun combination.

Any ideas?

FWIW when I recently put a Distortion in my Jackson with all the split/parallel options, I found that split kind of sounded the same just quieter. Parallel was similar but only a slightly different sound - not significant. I've never split a Jazz so I don't have feedback there. FWIW, but based on other experiences with the Jazz (and Distortion) in many guitars (Melody Makers, Les Pauls, SG), I'm inclined to believe parallel coils on each pickup might be more useful to change up the sound. If you just want to change the heat without changing the sound, split would be fine. YMMV

I say that splitting those pickups sounds better to me than parallel. And you can split both with 1 switch if you like.

I wrote to my friend/former guitar tech Juankyman last night. I believe I'll stick with my stock coil/split switch and cancel my ON-ON-ON DPDT switch purchase. Really wanted to have something extra if possible but if it ain't worthwhile, I'll keep it as stock as possible. Know if PRS just coil split or does something else? There's no hum on the coil splitting*

No hum sounds like parallel.
I do the same with the Bluesbucker in the neck of my LP.
It’s just a more usable sound for me.
That said, I don’t use it all that much and I never used the split sound. I just never liked it and especially didn’t like the hum.

I also have the Custom 5/Jazz combo in a mahogany-body LTD and I'm very happy with it. I was nervous about the Custom 5's mid absence, but it hasn't been an issue at all. And I play a fair bit of metal, though not on the extreme side. Mostly thrash and classic metal. The Custom 5 cuts through very nicely with distortion. The Jazz is an excellent soloing pup with a chimey voice.

What are the best Seymour Duncan pickups?

Welcome to the forum. You might want to start a new thread for this topic. Also, you'll need to provide more information, like what guitar, amp and style of music; because the question of what is 'best' cannot be answered without that context.
