Which speaker are best with a JCM 800 2204???

Re: Which speaker are best with a JCM 800 2204???

SNAP! Ok, how do I locate it? Where is it? Picture diagram perhaps?

You said vertical inputs so the pots will be chassis mounted...

Pull the chassis and look at the controls and on the back of the volume pot do you see a cap??

More than likely it'll be a round little ceramic disc cap

Aren't I suppose to drain the capacitors or discharge the filter caps or whatever before I even think about opening the amp? I mean, I am not comfortable working with tube amps. I have literally no experience working with them other than changing the pre amp tubes and have no idea what to touch and what not to touch... :dunno:

If you're that nervous about it then take it to a tech...

No need in getting hurt.

Heh heh, OK. Yeah. I just don't know a thing about em, but thanks for the willingness to help. I've got an appointment on Wednesday to get it all sorted out. I'll let you know how it goes!

Clipping the bright cap can be done in a matter of minutes...see if the tech yer taking it to will clip the cap then let you try it there in his shop...

If that puts it where you want it then roll out, if not then leave it with him and have him tweak things a bit more...

yeah, right on. That's what I'll do. He's a cool guy and the type who will stay there in the shop with me until we reach a solution. Thanks man! Basically, he knows amps really well, but he isn't like a modder or anything. We'll basically be going in there and shooting around until we find out what works. Or, until we conclude that I need different speakers. Is that a bad idea?

Clipping the cap will make a HUGE difference...if you still think the V30 cab is too bright with the bright cap clipped then start speaker shopping...just my 2 cents and that's what I'd do.

Heh Heh... I have a feeling you've done this kind of thing a time or two. haha! Right on guy who invented fire. That is how I shall proceed and then I shall update on my findings. CHEERS. :beerchug:

Re: Which speaker are best with a JCM 800 2204???

lots of great comments from really talented bros here

I had one of these, a 2203 and a jcm900 50 watter. make sure to get a really inefficient speaker that does not emphasize midrange at all!

tons of midrange and loudness with that amp...I scrapped mine and got an Orange Thunderverb but that is another story...

Re: Which speaker are best with a JCM 800 2204???

65s. Another nice thing about the 65s is that they are lower sensitivity (97 db) so you can turn the amp up a bit more into its sweet spot before it gets too loud.

If it's a 50 watt amp then the G12H30 could be considered as it has relaxed upper mids-just the opposite of the V30.

Speakers you don't want would include the G12T75 because, although it has scooped mids (really too scooped), it has a razor sharp treble. And the G12M70, the most hated stock speaker in the history of Marshall amps.

Dude, Lake Placid Blues, I just looked up what this speaker sensitivity stuff actually means and it makes a huge difference how sensitive the speaker is! My vintage 30's are 3 dbs louder than the 65's and that accounts for quite a difference apparently. This is exactly what I'm looking for -better tone at a lower volume. I'm gonna find some G12 65's tomorrow man and let you know how it goes...

Re: Which speaker are best with a JCM 800 2204???

The least sensitive speaker I found is Rocket 50 at 95db's. I know everyone on here is going to say they are a piece of crap, but I wanna try some! Some times "crappy" things can work. It might not, but it would be at least cool to try, no? Some body chime in about the ROCKET 50's!!! RRAAAARRRR!!!

Re: Which speaker are best with a JCM 800 2204???

Don't buy simply based on db ratings but at the same time remember that the speakers efficiency is ther key to volume!

Your Marshall is 50 watts but you can hear a watt...a watt is a unit of heat displacement, a decibel on the other hand IS a unit of volume!!!

If you are running 2 V30's then going to 2 G1265 will cut your overall volume by a fair bit...going to one will be even less!

Wait, what exactly is the math on that? Going to one speaker that is. I was under the impression that the power was simply spread out evenly amongst the speakers and that the amount of speakers didn't matter. Until maybe, you got to a certain amount of speakers that exceeded the amount of their db's (?) Hey I'm just an artist. Enlighten me on this phenomena.

There is no real formula with db's as it will all vary depending on the place you are in the db scale...

That said when you add speakers you add wave front and that means more volume.

If you have 2 100 db speakers the volume is about the same as having 4 97db speakers...

If you have 1 100db speaker then you're about the range of 2 97db speakers...

4 100 db speakers is about 8 97db speakers...

And so on...

If you want to really work your amp at low volumes you want a single speaker and the lower the db rating the better...

A 2204 into a single G12-65 will be pretty manageable compared to 2 V30's.

Ahhhhhh... "Wave Front". I believe I've also heard it referred to as "Accoustic Coupling"(?) Very cool info man. Thanks a lot...

Re: Which speaker are best with a JCM 800 2204???

This is going to seem like a stupid question and I'm sure that I already know the answer, but just to clarify: The 65 speaker that everyone is recommending would be the regular Heritage g12-65 and not the g12m-65 Creamback. Correct?

Thanks...

Re: Which speaker are best with a JCM 800 2204???

Ok so, I've got another thread going on right now called "OK, It's gotta be the guitars" and that explains in detail my dilemma, but here's the short of it:

I've got a JCM 800 2004 (vertical input) running through a 2x12 (Avatar Contemporary Cab) with Vintage 30's. On 1, the sound is Godly. Past that it's ear bleeding harshness bright festival from hell. I'm actually going to mod the amp next week to take some of the brightness down cuz it's just unbearable, but I'm hearing from some that Vintage thirties could actually be a bad voicing for the 800.

Any suggestions about speakers? The amp is stock -that's been verified.

So I guess the question is how much of the harshness is from the speakers and how much is from that dang stinkin bright amp?

PEACE...

I can tell you that my old Marshalls get significantly warmer and less harsh as the volume goes up. They were design for the arena, not he coffee shop unfortunately.

That said the V30 are not helping, particularly at lower volumes. I think the G12-65's are a good choice as well as Greenbacks or the like

Correct. The G12m-65 Creamback is a higher powered Greenback. the G12-65 being mentioned here is a different speaker

Re: Which speaker are best with a JCM 800 2204???

Right on. Thanks man. Gonna put the order in and let ya'll know how it goes!

Re: Which speaker are best with a JCM 800 2204???

Side note on the bright caps...the more you turn up the volume the less that cap has any effect...at low volumes it's very much in play, on 10 it might as well not be there...

I can't stress enough how big of a difference clipping the bright cap will make if you keep the amp at say 6 or below.
