Which Straplocks?

Re: Which Straplocks?

Schallers are good, but use a dab of loctitie on the nuts to make them foolproof.
Dunlops look like they will fail but they dont seem to, so all is good.
Both work well.

Re: Which Straplocks?

I used to drill a hole through a quarter and permanently fixed the straps to my guitars. It can be a PITA if you're sitting down playing, but those straps ain't coming off unless you rip the screws out of the wood.

Re: Which Straplocks?

The Schallers dropped my guitar, so I switched to Dunlop. The DiMarzio ClipLok is good too, has a bit of an 80s vibe though.

The Dunlops dropped my guitar, so I switched to Schaller, true story........Since the part thats on the strap is kinda horse-shoe shaped, mount it so the open end is facing up. If anything fails the button "should" remain in the "cradle" of this part. I use Elmers glue on the threads going into the body and regularly check the tightness of the nut on the strap..............NEVER had a problem and I've been gigging regularly this way for about 23 years!

Now that I think about it, I've seen more folks install Schallers wrong than I care to count. It amazed me when I saw them and had to point it out. It's simple common sense when looking at it.

This! If they are installed correctly, there is no way your guitar will come off the strap. Even if the mechanics of the lock fail or wear out, the guitar will stay in place...safe and secure.

I've got Schaller/Fender straplocks on most of my guitars with not even the slightest hint of a problem. I am totally secure (physically as well as mentally) with these.

I've got Dunlap on a couple guitars with no failures yet, but they do kinda scare me. I've seen the balls in those kind of bearings go flying before.

Re: Which Straplocks?

Just realized the third "mystery" strap locks that I have are indeed schallers. I really like them. They do need to be installed correctly, like everyone is saying. I like how they don't stick out from the guitar like dunlops do. If you don't need to do any crazy guitar swinging the schallers are probably the best bet. The dunlops are probably the best choice for this guy though:

I think the singers best bet would have been a helmet.

Re: Which Straplocks?

If you regularly tighten the nut on the Schallers, and install them so the strap button sits in the cup, they're pretty fool proof. I go over my guitars and tighten everything every couple of gigs, so they get included.

Re: Which Straplocks?

One of the things I love about the Dunlop Duals is that you don't need to connect the inserts to your strap. The buttons act like normal strap buttons. So you can pass on the locks altogether, or you can put your strap on like you would on a normal button, and then put the inserts on afterward, as simple retainers, like a high-tech version of the Grolsch washers. In taht capacity, the buttons are doing all of the holding, and the inserts act only as backups.

The main thing I dislike about the Schallers is that you need to dedicate your straps to being lockers; a strap without the clamps installed will likely fall off of the buttons unless the eyelets are very tight. If you forget a strap, you have to hope that someone else at the gig has a strap with Schaller lockers on it. And if someone asks to borrow your strap, and they don't have the Schaller buttons, you hope someone has the right size of wrench handy.

Another thing I like about the Dunlop Duals is that you don't need to orient the inserts a certain way on your strap ends, and you don't need a wrench to install or remove them.

Neither one has ever dropped one of my guitars.

I personally prefer my Dimarzio Cliplocks for the simple fact they feel good (both the cotton and nylon versions) and they dont put the extra strain on the guitar because the straps arent sticking out 2 inches from the guitar and are actually flush with the body. Heard of the dunlops and schallers tearing out on people before..

Only on idiots who either install them incorrectly, or who never check them or do any upkeep on their guitars.

Even on my guitars WITHOUT straplocks, I regularly check the strap buttons and keep them tight. On most of my guitars, I have installed the strap buttons or straplocks with longer screws to hold into the body more securely.

Re: Which Straplocks?

I use Schaller and Dunlop. I've only had one instance when the dunlop came out but I really couldnt say if I clicked in the thing all the way that time. Never had an issue with Schallers. Each have their positives and negatives. If you like Grolsch, you could buy 2 of them and have a set of usable "strap retention devices". I can call them locks technically, but they seem like they do a reasonable job.
