Which tele to buy?

I really want to get a tele for bluesy stuff and make my strat type into my proper rock/metal axe with some sort of single size hummer in the neck to go with the Custom bridge or possibly change to a double fat. Anyway down to the real question I want single coils in it and something I could put a strat neck pup in would be nice as I have one that I would like to drop in. Price around £200GBP xe.com makes that about $395USD. All opinions welcome. Obviously if I need to ship it the cost needs to be included in the £200.

yeah, I own a Mexican Tele and it's amazing with just a few simple tweaks.

If you're going to get a Tele mainly for Blues, I gotta say the Light Ash. It's a little more than your price range, but worth it. It's F**KING BEAUTIFUL!! Like amazing. Natural finish, black pickguard, birds-eye maple neck, abalone dot inlays, compensated 3-saddle bridge, and Duncan Alnico Pro 2 pups. These pups will give you an excellent blues tone, the ash providing sweet highs, the neck giving great sustain, and the body being swamp ash, it's lighter than an alder Tele.

I was thinking of buying it and dropping in a Vintage '54, but I got offered Sunny for $350 and decided it was a worthy buy, as everything on it is as if it was an American. I probably eventually will

I have a mexican tele.

The key is pretty heavy strings on em. They play wonderfully once they have some real strings instead of pissy 9s.

I have really low action with 11s.

If there's one thing I've learned over the years I've been playing it's to never judge an instrument by whats written on the headstock. If it feels good, sounds good and makes you play better...it's a good guitar. Sometimes I'm guilty of prejudice but I'm working to overcome it so I can :headbang: .

Go to Reverendguitars.com and drool over some of the telestrat style imports. They are slightly out of your range but some used ones should hit ebay soon. Always fantastic planks for the buck.:eek13:

It says fender on the headstock...

Good enough for me!

Re: Which tele to buy?

I played a MIM alder body Tele a few days ago. It felt (good neck, medium jumbo frets) but:
a. if they make ash models (pretty sure they do) go for one. Alder doesn't sound right in Teles.
b. the pups wern't great, lifeless and didn't have enough output. But of course, that's something you can take care of...

Re: Which tele to buy?

Well the MIM tele sounds like a plan :-P I definitely like the sound of the ash one which will save me on pups anyway the only problem is where the hell do I get it from? I found them at soundcontrol but £350 for a standard and £400 for the ash!!

You may need to check out eBay.

Re: Which tele to buy?

i say buy american. i think there're some good reasons why they cost more than mexican models. i've tried the two and i think there is a substatial enough difference between the sound and feel to consider the american made tele.

There's also a substantial price difference, and it sounds like a new MIM Tele is already out of his price range.

Re: Which tele to buy?

well I think this is the obvious choice but I can't see it staying this cheap for long with 5 bids already :( I reckon I could probably stretch £300 but lets see how it goes

Re: Which tele to buy?

Hmm this one looks pretty smart as well might have to switch back to the brass saddles mind but I'll give it a try first

Re: Which tele to buy?

Those eBay Teles are nice, especially the second one. No, they won't stay that low, but you can always place a bid. Placing a bid costs nothing, and if your bid is something you can reasonably afford, you may find yourself pleasantly surprised as the owner of one of these babies.
