Which would you prefer and why? FS-1 or SSL5?

Which would you prefer and why? I'm intrigued by the Gilmour setup. Particularly, each of these bridge pickups. I see that he used the FS-1 for Animals and The Wall, then switched to the SSL5. But, I've read that the FS-1 is more of an "Yngwie" type of sound. I'm not sure what to believe, because The Wall just sounds great to me, and not at all like Yngwie.

Neither. I prefer the STK-S6. Is has that Gilmourish sound without all that ducking hum and buzz.

If you want true single coil tone, you need true single coil. People have been using them for decades. It's really only specific cases when that ever becomes a problem. Modern technology has made people to develop innate fear towards even possibility of getting some mains hum...

If the OP wants Gilmour lead tones without the f@cking noise, he needs the STK-S6.

No need to be offended. My point was that talking about "f@cking noise" is really exaggerated. I've never experienced a troublesome hum from single coils, honestly. When you're stacking up gain, it's the feedback that kills, not single coil hum.

I haven't tried STK-S6 I must admit. But having dummy coild does affect the dynamics of your setup, even if you can tweak it to sound like classic strat.

Not a fan of humbucking singles either. Any of them. I'll take tone over hum-free anyday. They all have a wierd compression not unlike actives.

Ive done the ssl5/fs1 comparison. Ssl5 got ripped out and FS1 went back in. The ss5 is all midrange and doesn't balance as well with vintage style singles as the FS1 does. It was hard for me to dial in amp eq to get all 3 pickups to sound worth a damn. FS1 has more lows and highs, mids are there but not overbearing. The ssl5 just seems like it works ok for single note eads. Hated it for crunch rhythm, or cleans. With the FS1 I could roll the guitar volume back a little and it was very much like a vintage output single. Ssl5 didn't clean up like that.

If you use the bridge pickup for anything besides leads, Id go FS1. Gilmour pretty much uses the bridge for fuzzed out heavy delayed lead work.

i like the classic stack+ line of pups and have two guitars with various setups and am VERY happy with how they sound. they also dont sound just like single coils. i have a bunch of strats most have true single coils but two have classic stack+ and one has blackout singles. they all do what they do really really well but what they do is at least slightly different.
